All bad

Every one of this items (sports) are reproductions. They are the wrong size and look like crap to boot.

How can you tell on the Ty Cobb glove sign? I am comparing it to the one on the Heritage website, and it looks pretty good to me. Sizes are similar. Discoloring of the checkerboard could be because of sunlight. Obviously, if I was selling a $20k item I wouldn't do it on ebay, but still, I can't tell how you determine it's a fake.

The two are indeed quite similar, and it would be very helpful to see both pieces in person, as opposed to on a flat screen. I will say that I've seen at least half a dozen of these through the years. Some in major auctions/some on eBay.

But every single example has that same "water damage" and glare in the lower-left corner. Very fishy, and makes me question whether some of the purported "originals" are even legit.

Todeen,

I think you answered your own question. If this Cobb were a 20K item, either 1) the seller would be asking a higher price for it to begin with (if he knew what he had) or 2) it wouldn't be languishing around at a low price even if it is on eBay. There are many eyes watching eBay and have Ty Cobb in their saved searches so if this were real the bid would be much higher.

Check the last two words he puts at the end of all his descriptions "LIMITED PRODUCTION". Quite the disclaimer.

Any eBay still allows it. unbelievable

I've reported sellers more blatant than this to ebay. Most recently, I called and spoke to a friendly Filipino who told me she was sorry but she had no department to pass me on to or with whom to share my concern. She assured me the best approach was to use the "report item" link within the listing...which I do about about a dozen times a week with no action taken... and then she wanted to know if there was anything else she could help me with. Totally useless...Nice girl though.

I will say this though...Calling ebay out on Twitter gets a nearly immediate response. Not much action taken that I can tell thus far...but they don't like to appear negligent on Twitter. Maybe if more people publicly called them out, they'd do something about it.

I totally missed that as a statement of reproduction. Since he was talking about its rarity, I figured that it went together with that. Tricky tricky. Thanks!

And at least half a dozen more bogus signs are closing tonight… All of which are realizing similar (or even higher) prices.

I wonder what percentage of these "winning" bidders are simply naive, and what percent are knowingly flipping these fake signs, hoping for big money. Very sad. :(

Shoeless Moe 05-02-2019 06:55 PM

...and if you didn't get your bid in on these fakes, don't fret, he'll be listing the same ones not too far down the road. So you'll get a second chance.
