Interest? ‘53 Stahl-Meyer Mantle
A bit out of my typical posts (and knowledge) but I have an opportunity to purchase a fresh to the hobby, raw, early ‘50s collection. The best card is the ‘53 stahl-Meyer Mantle.
Id want to sell this card privately as it doesn’t fit my collecting focus. Hard to say exactly but it’s pretty beat up - although not completely trashed so figure around a “Fair”. How realistic is it to sell a card like this NOT at auction? Could it fetch historical (eg $2k or so) pricing in a private sale? Thoughts or inquiries are most welcome ... but I do want to be clear that I haven’t purchased it... yet :) Best Scott |
Need to post a picture
I think it would be an easy card to sell privately IF it were priced right for the condition it's in. Seeing a picture of both front and back would go a long way to offering a more accurate answer to your question. AS most copies are not in great condition - eye appeal matters greatly. Good luck.

Hi Scott, I was/am a big Mantle collector and had much of his oddball stuff (was #4 on Mantle Master Registry). I had a 53 Stahl PSA 1MK with a bunch of creases in the corners, and some staining along with a black stamp. I paid $1300 for it back in 2016... honestly I’d say a raw beat up 53 Stahl would be under $1k... if graded then a bit over $1k assuming the condition. They are almost all pretty beat up, but it is the easiest to find of the Stahls and I do think the lesser conditioned Mantle non mainstream cards have cooled off a bit the past couple of years. There were a couple of big collectors going for the Mantle Master registry that have accumulated the Carr’s they needed and really pushed the market up on PSA graded oddball items.

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions. I have committed to buying the collection but expect for the transaction itself to take some time. I will provide more details when cards are available for sale.
