Bowman artist gets the 1950 Leo the Lip's team wrong
Noticed this card a couple of days ago and didn't see a previous thread about it.
https://images.psacard.com/s3/cu-psa...oundcorners=10 Despite Durocher being the Giants manager, the artist drew him in Yankees uniform colors. And doing an internet search, Sterling auctionhouse noticed it as well, but didn't call it an uncorrected error. They just listed him as the Yankees manager. http://www.sterlingsportsauctions.co...-lot46389.aspx While most of the Yankees players are drawn in pinstripes, the jersey/cap coloring is the same on the few that are shown in gray jerseys. Giants are mostly drawn this way, with a reddish piping around the neck and in the NY cap logo: https://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/1950...&size=original 1950 Bowman - [Base] #65 - Dave Koslo Courtesy of COMC.com |

The logo on the hat looks like the Giants NY symbol to me and the New York on the jersey looks similar to the New York on the example you show. I think the artist may have been working off a black and white photo and mistakenly changed the colors to the Yankees motif instead of the Giants.
Here are the difference of the Giants and Yankees logos. You can clearly see the Y in NY is below the N on the Giants logo and above the N on the Yankees logo. |
They colored it correctly in the 1951 Bowman set

That doesn't surprise me in the least; I'm sure they got much fanmail over the coloration at the time. Probably seemed like treason to the Giants fans. If there was Twitter in 1950, the @bowman account would have been hearing it. ;-)

Wasn't it Leo the Lip? Guess our OP got the name wrong

That I did; I thought he was a mobster. I'll update. I knew it didn't sound exactly right when I posted it.
