Ode to the Great Game: by Scott M. Roberts Snow is on the ground, cold and dark, but soon it will go away Green Grass will come out and for a long time will stay Then the sounds we love to hear will be in the air The Crack of the bat, the Vendor hawking dogs….and the umpj yells It’s fair Every year, it’s a right of life, it started so many years in the past. With King Kelly, Commy, Mugsy and the rest. Who knew it would always last. Then came The Peach, Honus, Matty, and The Big Train These guys were the heart and soul of our great game. One day a man needed money to finance his broadway show. He sold a big man to the Yankees, I think everyone knows. The Great Bambino took over, and was bigger than the game it seemed Home Runs brought people to their feet, with so many joyous screams And for many years, through wars and depression, they all kept us sane Gehrig, Foxx, Grove, The Hack, Ki Ki and Teddy Ballgame Now, its many years later, and so many have come and gone But guys like Harper, Trout and Betts keep the great game moving on So, when we wake up, look at the grass and hear the crack of bat on ball We know its finally here, so we will can only say “LETS PLAY BALL”. |
Nice poem, Scott. Thanks for sharing.
