E102 cards from 1908 or 1909?
I've been doing some research on these cards - particularly the Wagner batting, because it looks awesome. I noticed some are graded as 1908 while others are 1909. Any ideas as to why? VCP has them as 1908. EDIT: I see there are some people who have asked this already so I'll just read. Thanks guys :)

Here's an old thread that discusses it. Basically, the exact time frame is not fully known.

When I first got back into the hobby, around 1995 or 1996, it was just assumed E102 was from 1908. I even bought one of my first higher end cards (for me) a nice Cobby in order to have his rookie :). Regardless of the year I wish I still had it. And it was acquired from John Spen.cer, no less. (who started the predecessor to this forum and is still a member.)
Here is the excerpt for E102 from the first Krause big book I ever bought, 1997. There is a lot of good info in the link that is listed in this thread. . |
If I recall correctly, I've seen some think it's a possible 1910 release due to the players and team designations. Can't confirm this but it seems to be rattling around in my head.

Doing some research on the E102 issue and the release date, after reading this thread and the one inside appears its anywhere from 1908-10? Anyone else have any new info that nails down a firm release date or will the actual release date always be unknown?

Kevin in the previously linked post by DJ (post #5 within that link) pretty much clarifies that E102's were not a 1908 issue, but instead the earliest these cards were produced was August of 1909 because of Germany Schaeffer being traded to the Senators (the team he is identified on card) on August 9th, 1909, as well as David Shean being traded to Boston NL team on July 16th of 1909. Also, 1909 was the first year Dots Miller was in the MLB (with the Pirates), and it seems unlikely that he would have been included right from the get go in his rookie year. So to me the likely release year is 1910.
