Sold Pending Payment
Final 9 x 11" glossy proof sheet for the cover of a 1911 'Detroit Number' of 'Baseball Magazine'. The cover never made it to production. It features images of Ty Cobb, Sam Crawford, Hughie Jennings and others. This is the only copy of this image in any form that I am aware of. The artist, Gerrit Beneker was famous for his industrial paintings and WWI posters, but he also did quite a few Baseball Magazine covers during this period. The process was that he would submit a rough cover idea as a water color painting, then when approved by the publisher he would create a final painting which would then be made into a glossy cover proof sheet. This is the end result of that product, but in this case the proof sheet never translated into a magazine cover. The publisher mailed the original water color paintings, along with a proof sheet, back to Beneker. In almost all cases the items were folded up small enough to fit in an envelope. This one displays creases from folding but almost no damage along the creases - at some point it was flattened out with no adverse effects. This will frame up very nicely! The same auction that this was initially sold in featured Beneker's rough water-color painting that was apparently accepted by 'Baseball Magazine'. He then created a final painting which was made into this high-quality cover proof that never saw publication. Basically, there is no other copy of this image available as far as I am aware. $780 shipped, Paypal Friends & Family If interested, PM me |
