It has been the toughest month I have ever had in my life. I was able to pick these up recently however, they are very bittersweet at the moment.

Bob, sorry to hear that you have had a tough time recently.

Very happy to add these two to the collection. Game 4 of the 1932 World Series (Babe’s last one) and Game 4 of the 1947 series. Love that the original owner added “No Hitter” to the Ticket even though the No Hitter was broken up with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th!

vintage firesuit...
 

I mostly collect baseball stuff, but I'm always on the lookout for cool open wheel racing stuff, as well.

This firesuit came up for auction locally, as it was part of the collection of the late Scott Brayton and his dad Lee. I couldn't believe it was available for bid!! Gordon Johncock is a Michigan native and 2-time Indy 500 winner.

The tough part was that I couldn't make it to the live auction 2 weeks ago, as I was about 3 hours away at my son's hockey tournament. Thankfully, a close friend went for me and I couldn't be happier.

I'm guessing that it's from the late 60's to early 70's, but I haven't found an exact photo match. It shows good wear and has the right 'look'. Johncock is still alive at age 82 and lives about 4 hours from me. I'll probably send him a letter and picture asking if he can date it more accurately. I'd love to get it signed, but I have reservations about mailing it to him, even if he would agree to signing it.

Dick Fowler no-hitter ticket and signed vintage snapshot
 

I recently managed to fill a huge hole in my no-hitter ticket collection:
A fully dated ticket stub from Philadelphia A's pitcher Dick Fowler's no-hitter on 9/9/45 @ Philly. Dated tickets from earlier Philadelphia games are the exception, not the rule as most did not have dates on them.
Believe it or not, this ticket took me over 45 years to find. It's been a long slog to say the least... Many thanks to net54's David Shakir for finding this guy for me

Dick Fowler had a very unusual bio. Prior to pitching in the ML he was actually a Canadian Mountie. In addition, he was pretty large in stature for a player in the 1940's. Retrosheet.org has him listed as being 6' 4.5" and weighing 230 lbs. - big dude!

I recently also acquired a cool circa 1947 signed snapshot of Dick Fowler clowning around with his diminutive great pitching teammate, Bobby Schantz, and another unnamed tall pitcher on the A's. Thanks to another great member of net54, Gary Scamehorn, for helping me add this snapshot to my mini collection of no-hit pitcher snapshots. Gary is one of the nicest guys out there & he manages to find a lot of incredible vintage snapshots, which is his collecting focus.

Picked up these Philadelphia A's tickets from 1927 and 1926. 1927 had Collins Cobb and Wheat on the team.

Pretty expensive for a box seat....I guess things were good until 1929.

Which makes me think....how did baseball do through the Great Depression?

Happy to pick up this Philadelphia Athletics kids shirt. Made by Ely & Walker in 1949 when it was promoted with an essay contest. Winners were treated to regular season and World Series games. Image of the contest flyer is from the Hall of Fame but I would love to find one to display with the shirt.

I've seen the Washington Senators version of this shirt, maybe they made one for all the teams. Great item!

The Tony Lazzeri was in March, but the Roush was a bit earlier.

1923-25 H&B Edd Roush and a 1931 H&B Tony Lazzeri.

The Roush is a real club measuring 33 1/8" and 45 oz. The Lazzeri is 35" and 36 oz. Both bats are perfectly reflected in their respective ordering records. This Roush is now the heaviest bat in my collection.

The Lazzeri was sourced from a gentleman not far from Chicago. Fresh to the hobby.

Absolutely thrilled to win this Negro League scorecard. I was able to independently verify the date and venue for this game as well using some old Negro League history books. During the war years it was common for larger stadiums to rent themselves out to Negro League clubs to bring in some extra money. This program features HOFer Buck Leonard in the line up for the Grays and a very young, 20 year old Roy Campanella listed at catcher for the Giants:

That's a GREAT SCORECARD! I have been researching the Elites for years, since I met many of the players and their fans when I was in college in Baltimore in the 80's. They always get overshadowed by the Grays, but the Elite Giants had a solid team from 1939 through 1943, with one of the deepest pitching staffs in the Negro National League. Bill Byrd, Pullman Porter, Lefty Glover and Jonas Gaines were all top shelf arms. Then you had Campy of course, with Biz Mackey, Wild Bill Wright and Sammy T. Hughes who were no doubt of big league talent.

Unfortunately players were always abandoning the team to play in Mexico or other places. In 1942 for example, Campanella and 2nd baseman Sammy T. Hughes left the team at a crucial point in the pennant race to play an exhibition game in Cleveland. They were suspended and the Elites lost the games the pair missed. On top of that, Campy just took off for Mexico after that and the Elite Giants lost the pennant in the last weekend of the season. If those two were playing, the chances are Baltimore would have clinched the 2nd half pennant.

Anyway, don't get me started on the Elite Giants - nice scorecard and thanks for showing all the pages.

Fun Elite Giants fact: the team name is pronounced "EEE-Lite" Giants

These pale in comparison to that scorecard but, I still like them.

They are 14 X 21 inches, never seen any before, but now I have something else to look for...

1999 HOF Induction Formal Group Photo from the Bobby Doerr personal collection
 

In 1999 I attended the 60th HOF Induction in Cooperstown that featured the extremely popular class of Nolan Ryan, George Brett and Robin Yount. This induction was, at the time, one of the most attended HOF Inductions in history.

As part of my advanced Nolan Ryan collection, I have always kept my eye open for obscure items related to this 1999 HOF Induction.

Up until a few months ago, I had never known that for many years the HOF annually takes a formal group photo of the entire group of HOF'ers that were in attendance at the Induction. The photo is taken over HOF weekend at the Hotel Otesaga that resides across the street from the HOF. These photos are given only to HOF'ers in attendance and they are presented in a nice leatherette folio.

One of those in attendance, HOF'er Bobby Doerr, unfortunately passed in 2017 and an eBay seller in Oregon has slowly been selling off the contents of Mr. Doerr's estate. I had noticed several months ago that the seller was selling these photos to other induction years that Mr. Doerr had attended. I inquired about the 1999 Induction photo, but at the time the seller couldn't locate it. That changed this week, as the seller finally let me know that they had located it & I added this to my Nolan Ryan HOF Induction mini-collection.
Neat & obscure, to say the least, as I've never seen another in 20 years of looking...

This was a sweet pickup...about a month ago I'd had a very long day and about to pass out...any second I was headed to bed and I saw this on ebay...phew!...untouched in original frame with wavy glass...the only thing is the seller had gotten it on ebay years ago and didn't know where it came from or any history on it...I emailed Pryor Dodge hoping he would recognize the riders to no avail...I peered behind the photo but nothing...

In regards to the history of the piece, I am afraid that I do not have any details on it, other than I too purchased it on eBay maybe three years ago. Have you taken the back off yet? It is something that I always wanted to do and never got around to it.

Really like the scorecard for the Grays vs. Elite Giants. I enjoy all teams Baltimore so this is just a great item. Thanks so much for sharing your pickup.

Also, I’ve never seen a formal HOF induction group photo like that. Wonder how many years this took place. Love to find something like this for the 1983 induction ceremony. Like you with Ryan I always look for items related to Brooksie’s induction ceremony.

I'm very proud to own several great game used items from Nolan's career:

-Game balls from 6 of his 7 no-hitters, as well as game balls from several key milestone games (19K game on 8/12/74, 4,000th K game, 3509th K game- passing Walter Johnson, 5,000th K game etc.)

-Nolan's glove from his record setting 1989 season in which he passed 5,000 career strikeouts, was the oldest winning pitcher in the All Star game & struck out 300 in a season for his record 6th time (Randy Johnson has since tied this record). Ryan game used gloves are really tough. I know of about 3 in the hobby that I believe to be real. This one came directly from Nolan, so the provenance is terrific.

-Nolan's final career win uniform (win # 324) jersey & pants

-Game used hats from the Angels, Astros & Rangers with incredible provenance

I must admit though that adding unique Ryan items has really slowed down now, as I don't have many items on my Ryan bucket list at this point.

BTW, while talking about weird Ryan related game used collectibles, I read this article in SCD many years ago about, quite certainly, the most bizarre Ryan collectible related to one of his major milestones. This came from Home Plate umpire Dave Pallone's book "Behind the Mask"

Ironically, I actually own home plate umpire Pallone's personal game ball from Ryan's final pitch in this 4,000th K game.
Nolan actually struck out friend & former teammate Danny Heep for his 4,000th K and his 4,004th K. The ball I own is for the strikeout of Danny Heep for the 4,004th K.
