I don't really follow the vintage game used equipment market but that sweater is awesome!

I'd buy one if they remade these things, love the purple NY!

I would think that with the rarity of the sweater and the direct link to Pipp $100k would be an easy number. But I’m not that well versed on auction values of such items. But if 2 guys with big pockets want it, there is no telling what it might bring.

Thus I'd put Pipp's at 50-60K

Pipp roomed with Babe Ruth, imagine what that sweater has witnessed...
I’m a Sox fan, and will echo that is one cool sweater. The Yankees should absolutely make nice replicas of that!

I saw that last night...the sweater is in incredible shape! I thought the estimate was pretty close to spot on! Esp with the provenance.

Just a tad high, in my opinion (both on the Cleats and the Sweater). But Insurance Values are always inflated a bit.

So I think it was pretty spot-on. Pipp is definitely one of the better players that could have worn this style sweater during this era.

Not problem with the sweater price, but I was a tiny suprised the cleats weren't more by 20%.

This sweater is a completely different style than the Witt sweater. Much greater Eye Appeal IMO. I think the 100k + range if it hit the Market now. Wonderful item happy it was shared.

Still think its 50K-60K item based on the recent sale of the "comparable", but not exact match. And it's just Pipp, it's not Gehrig.


I just don't see how it gets to 100K from, again the "similar" one, that just sold for 38K, and I'd actually prefer a 1925 Jersey that went recently for only 11K:

As Mark and Jay already mentioned, this appraisal on AR is being quoted as insurance estimate, which is inflated a bit compared to auction prices because it takes into account the effort and cost it would take to find a replacement.

So if the insurance appraisal on the sweater is $75K, they are considering it would sell at auction for about $50K - $60K, which is probably on the mark or a bit conservative.

Hard to guess this one because of the unique status of Pipp.

Given two well-heeled Yankees collectors--and there are quite a few--the sweater would easily reach--and surpass--that estimate.

I am a uniform and sweater collector. The issue for me with a lot of stuff that comes from the families is whether or not it was used during the playing career. I like the ones where the name is sewn in the collar and we know that this is something that was at least tagged correctly. I have seen 2-3 dead ball heirlooms passed down from families claiming to be game worn, which were never tagged as such and were either reunion issues, or perhaps an extra grabbed out of the clubhouse. Until the 1940’s, players were charged if they did not return their team equipment.
I want this to be real and properly tagged. If it is, I think there is no reason it cannot get to a high valuation. If it is not, the recent softness in the market might dictate a lower price.

In April 2017 I won a Collegian Clothes advertising sign featuring a shot putter, from Grant in one of his non-sport auctions...I wasn't familiar with his auction house and I remember being a little surprised such a sign ended up way the heck in the far reaches of Washington state near Spokane...I had some questions about the sign and called them. I remember how remarkably pleasant everyone I spoke to was...First I talked to his wife then him directly...I remember when the rep called me during the auction so I could bid by phone...As the bidding escalated he seemed a bit surprised at the number of bids it was getting...as was I...I thought I would get it for practically nothing...figuring who but me would want a track sign...but someone else wanted it too...I still think I got a good deal though as it's one of the nicest track related signs I've seen and they are quite rare...especially a shot putter...below are a couple other track signs I have...
