A really good read re George H. W. Bush
I assume everyone knows that President George H. W. Bush was a sports enthusiast. With his passing, much is being written about him. Regardless of your political leaning, I am absolutely positive you will greatly enjoy this piece in today's Washington Post written by Thomas Boswell, the dean of DC's sports writers and one of the best.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sport...=.c3dfb5610339 Leon, if I have put this in the wrong forum, please move it to the correct one. |
Thanks for posting!

I also posted on George H.W. Bush and his baseball career on my website. I included him in my book a few years ago, and he sent me a really nice letter along with a signed photo of he and Babe Ruth from 1948. You can see those items along with my drawing of him at:

AWESOME Gary!

The famous picture of him in a Yale baseball uniform, from 1948, was made into a baseball card, and I believe it is pretty valuable (I don't know the details, I assume it is scarce).

No, it's the one of him sitting on that low fence. I think that fence is pretty famous, because there are 19th century photos of Amos Alonzo Stagg, and I think he's sitting in the exact same place (or maybe not).

Here is a photograph of the Yale baseball team, circa 1882. Note that the players are sitting in the same spot as GHWB was in 1948. The tree background behind Bush's left shoulder exactly matches the upper right background of the team photo. You can even see part of the railing Bush is sitting on, although it looks like it was upgraded a bit over the years.
And the man sitting in the center holding a baseball is a roughly 20-year-old Amos Alonzo Stagg (he would die in 1965 at the age of 102). |
This is the captain's pose. Every captain of every sports team at Yale has had their photo taken with this background. I have one in my archives of Eddie Eagan as captain of the boxing team and the only athlete to win a gold medal in both the winter and summer Olympics.

I figured that might be the case Michael, and I was hoping someone who knew more about it than I did could offer some background. Thanks.

Could someone please post the picture of his service dog, Sully, sleeping next to H.W.'s flag-drapped coffin?
'MISSION ACCOMPLISHED' Definitely the most moving picture I've seen this year. |

Thanks for the read Val and Gary. Great memories of an amazing and modest man.

Thanks for all the great posts in this thread. Great reads indeed. I teared up a little with the photo of his service dog.
