The World is Coming to an End
PSA is grading coupons:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1887-N172-O...AAAOSwoDFb8hTJ I wonder if I can get the Tide coupons from my newspaper graded. I know they will be hand cut, but I will cut them neatly, making sure not to violate the black borders. |

Put in a good word with them for these 1961 This Day In Sports features

Same Seller that has the coupon, has a guy from the only sport I can participate in these days:

I might bid this up to $3 !

Wanna start a pool and see who comes closest to the final price....
I wonder how much it costs to slab a coupon. |

Doesn't seem like a bad price. The seller probably spent more in grading fees alone.

I love the humor in this thread but as someone who collects coupons I'll offer an alternate review.
This is the second, maybe third graded coupon I've seen, all Goodwin N173 coupons. Out of the hundreds of different early tobacco coupons, there are only a handful that would cover the grading fee, this being one of them. As of late these N173 coupons have fetched $50-$100 each, far more than they would garner a mere ten years ago. In most cases it would be a bad idea to grade coupons (from a value perspective). If PSA and others wish to legitimately authenticate coupons they should try to become knowledgeable on them (not easy, very little available material). PSA has a couple mistakes on this rather popular and recognizable coupon . . . It was issued in 1889 (not 1887) and shouldn't reference N172. All Goodwin US tobacco packs in 1889 likely included this coupon or one very similar to it (3 different 1889 coupons). Some of these Goodwin cigarette packs didn't include N172s but instead N165 and others. A more accurate label would read . . . 1889 Goodwin Redemption Coupon - Type 2 Redemption for N173, A36, A37, A35, & A38 I list the albums in the order they are referenced on the coupon. |

so
it's OK to grade a card but not a related coupon? One is no sillier than the other. Economics may not so good but not an isolated case. I collect coupons for Ginter (THANKS AGAIN JOE for the ones you sent me) as they are part of the whole picture. Mine are NOT graded. I believe the coupon is a bargain at 20.00 or less - graded or otherwise.
|
I wonder why it was only a Good 2 ?? Maybe it was 2 good to be true?

I love the Tobacco coupons and have collected them for years, mine found a good new home with Joe a few years back. These were inserted into the packs of tobacco with the cards and offered the premiums like N173’s, and (more commonly) for the highly collected albums that were offered by the various companies. I have no problem with them being graded. |
I don't have a problem with them being graded but think it's kind of silly. Next thing is we will see these getting graded!! Anyone for a ramen noodles in an 8 holder :).

Leon, seriously, "a ramen noodle"? No, the noodle has to have some significance, for example, "noodle remaining from a bowl that Trump ate from". Who's gonna want a random "ramen noodle?"

I find it more ridiculous that people get the National Game or Allegheny cards graded. Would you grade community chest cards out of a Monopoly game?

I still have the free hot dog coupon the Mets gave to fans attending the 9/9/09 game at Citi Field.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2469/3...53a3c4bb0b.jpg Also the voucher fans received on "Strawberry Sunday" (5/6/84 at Shea Stadium) good for a free Carvel strawberry ice cream sundae. https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7138/7...2eba92cb_z.jpg Do I need to be getting these slabbed  |
I don't see an issue w/ the coupons being slabbed. It protects & identifies the item, & it makes a nice companion piece to the card set.
The grading companies slab tickets and other related items as well. Here's a N173 cabinet checklist i have that's slabbed https://www.qualitycards.com/pictures/1285809072.jpg https://www.qualitycards.com/pictures/1285809072b.jpg |
They slab photos...they slab postcards...they slab cutouts from magazines...they slab ticket stubs...and many on here have discussed slabbing slabs!!!
Slabbing these coupons isn't a concern to me. |
Here's another one for you Jay, a slabbed Metamorphic Trade Card:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1888-Old-Ju...P8Yo:rk:3:pf:1 |
I bet TPGs will slab used toilet paper if you pay the fee. The sad thing on the metamorphic is that it got a one with a qualifier and it is actually a comparatively nice copy, better than most.
