Help with ID on ‘70s(?) collector issued set
 

I’ve posted about these before but found two more. Anyone want to hazard a guess on what these are?

Someone keeps sending similar cards in to COMC that were from Renata Galasso orders and TCMA. What are the names on the cards? Maybe we can photo match if we know which players to look for.

Renata could have made these. I asked my dad and he didn’t think so though. I also thought they might be TCMA but they look too low quality even for their early sets. Could they be Ed(not Rob, LOL) Broders?

I'm actually in the process of cataloging all of the Renata Galasso sets, something that's proving to be a much larger project than I anticipated. I've noticed two things so far about all of their sets: 1.) they took a certain amount of pride in the quality of the product they were producing, and 2.) they made sure to identify the sets as a Renata Galasso product somehow (RGI, typically).

This roject has led me down an oddball baseball card set wormhole that has been rather enlightening. There must be hundreds of baseball card sets from the 1970s/early-1980s that are one-offs -- regional, local, businesses, card shows, non-profits, organizations, you name it. There's no end to them. Many of them depict players from the past, be it greats of the local team or all-timers.

Very rarely do they have blank backs. If they do, they're usually marked on the front with identifiers for who and why they were produced. I'm guessing by your post that these cards are blank-backed. Judging from the quality of the images and the type font (and the lack of promotional material) I'd bet these are not Renata Galasso. She was a great showlady and knew how to market her business.

Perhaps we'll be able to find a common thread amongst the players and that will help narrow down the possibilities.

They are blank backed and look inferior to RGI and TCMA. I can’t think of the name of the guy that made the collectors series of the tobacco and caramel cards in the late ‘60s. I think he was from Michigan or Wisconsin but I could be way off.

FWIW, in looking through some of my old issues of RG's BHCR, I have not seen any of those cards

If I had to venture a guess with my limited knowledge of all this I would think they were issued by Sports Cards for Collectors in their pre-TCMA days. Just my instinct and nothing more

And if you think the TCMA information is hard, the SCC information is even harder to figure out.

Were TCMA and RGI connected? I know they combined forces on a few sets but I thought that was the extent of the relationship and that they were two separate entities.

I don't think officially but young Aronstein could probably provide more details.

However, there is little doubt TCMA was a way for RGI to produce/distribute/sell their cards in addition to what RGI did themselves

Yeah, RGI paired up with TCMA and Topps on multiple occasions. They bought so much product from Topps directly that they had a unique relationship with them which allowed them to print their own sets with the help of Topps. The RGI story gets more and more interesting the more I find out. I'd love to be able to ask her some questions.

These cards do not look like SCFC cards to me and are definitely not TCMA issues. Images appear to be copies of copies and in general the SCFC and TCMA issued card images were far superior. Many used images created from original negs, or contact prints/photos from those negs. Don't think these would have made the cut :( .

I still think there may be TCMA SCFC cards from 70-71 but I will bow to Mr. Aronstein who has a better grip on what these are not
