Puerto Rico Deportivio- A Unknown Gem
4 Attachment(s)
As a long time collector of Negro and Latin baseball memorabilia I thought I had a pretty good idea of what was out there. I have a large collection of Cuban and Mexican publications. Many are of very low quality on very cheap paper ( though I still love them). Recently I discovered the Puerto Rico Deportivio magazine which was published beginning in the 1940's. Printed on glossy paper with great photos the pub has articles and images of negro league stars rarely seen. Below are a number of images from a couple of issues- note Willard Brown, Luke Easter, a very young Jim Gilliam and Pedro Cepeda. Would love to see if any one else had any copies

Very cool - thanks for sharing
Do you know how long the mag was published - I have a bunch of Clemente related pubs in the 60's and 70's - wonder if the title went that long - also would love to see/find issues form the 50's with Clemente content particularly 1951-1953. Please let me know if you run across any - even if they are not for sale.

Hey Jason,
Just ran across this thread. Neat publication. I just picked up a Puerto Rican scorebook that dovetails very neatly with these (posted in the September Pick Up Thread). Previously I wasn't aware how many of the negro league players played ball in PR. I thought they all pretty much just went to Cuba and Mexico for the winter leagues. Rob M |
