Joe Benz Auto
Now that it`s over was wondering what other Net 54`ers thought about this Joe Benz auto that recently ended on ebay. Watched it for a month and compared it too the few examples here on the site. Had a couple things going for it, well established seller, Govt dated post card, and $ back if not PSA certified. Anyway, didn`t want to out it while active but would much appreciate any thoughts from fellow site members. Thanx in advance, Murph

Sig looks good, as does the date/location of the cancellation mark of the GPC. Did you pick this one up?

Absolutely legit

I sold one about a year ago (GPC) from same year range that matches it exactly. I believe I sold it for less than the asking price you showed, but it looks absolutely fine to me.

Thank you gentlemen for sharing your thoughts. Yes I did pick this Benz up and it arrived the other day. Been trying to collect members of the 1919 Black Sox for a while now. Have about a dozen or so but the remaining players are mostly out of my limited price range. This transaction also included 2 Heilbroners, Herman Pilette and Buster Ross. Also putting together a "limited budget" Babe Ruth project. Trying to find all the Heilbroners cards for pitchers of the Babe`s HR`s , #`s 1,100,200,300 400 500 600 700 and the 1932 "called shot". Again appreciate your valued autograph input you guys are THE best ! Murph

Nice pickup Murph. I also collect the Black Sox, and agree that some can be very pricey...to say the least. I cannot access flicker, but was wondering which of the Black Sox you have and what scope (just the players or including people like Abe Attell, etc).

Here's my Benz auto for comparison
http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p...psmz5dsjz3.jpg Been collecting Black Sox related items for about 20 years now (not long compared to many other folks). No doubt that Benz is legit...was a little on the high end as far as price goes for him, but it was a GPC which usually gets a bump in value. As far as autographs go Ive been lucky in nabbing some tough 1919 Sox guys (Wilkinson, Ragan, Gleason) but have hit the availability wall now. I have 19 (including a Mrs Joe Jackson and not including a Risberg Im having authenticated) different 1919 Sox. Plus 5 possible Phantom players/spring training members (Bruno Haas, Ed Tabor, Bill Stewart, Roy Hansen, Fred Henry) Been beating the bushes trying to shake loose the toughies but no luck yet (I dont think I have ever in my life even seen an example of Win Noyes by the way)! Good luck with the collecting, I have many doubles of the easier guys if needed. |
There was a Win Noyes in the Heilbroner collection but it never hit the open market.

Wow Thomas, 20 (with Risberg) plus spring training members is quite an accomplishment. I have 15 (including Attell) but I don't think I'll get over 20...but you never know. Hey, how about posing a pic of your Kid Gleason? That's one I'd really like to get someday. |
Oops, nevermind. Just saw the Gleason in another thread. Super nice!
|
Thanks. That Gleason contract has been sold a few times by auction houses in the past I think for $1700, $1400 and I bought it for just under $1000 early this year...so prices have been dropping it seems

Here are a couple of Win Noyes for your exemplar files. Have never seen a Noyes come up for sale.
