Christy Mathewson Biography
I'm looking to read a good biography on Christy Mathewson. It looks like the most prominent ones online are Michael Hartley's book, which only has about 200 pages of text, and Philip Seib's book, which is similarly short.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm looking for a deep dive into his background, etc. Thanks, Mike |
"Matty: An American Hero" by Ray Robinson was pretty good, though I read it a long time ago.
Though not an autobiography, Mathewson's own book "Pitching in a Pinch, or Baseball from the Inside" includes many anecdotes from his playing days. "The Old Ball Game: How John McGraw, Christy Mathewson, and the New York Giants Created Modern Baseball" by Frank Deford is also a good Mathewson read, though not strictly a biography. |
The Deford book is fantastic. Way, way better than I expected.

After you read the biographies, try the Celebrant, by Greenberg, fiction, but excellent.

Wow!

Even though I recently opened my brick and mortar sports card shop, I still LOVE Amazon for certain things......like this book! That being said, please support your local shops whenever you can! Take care! Mike |
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I've read the Celebrant and agree, it's a great book!
