Help with player/team/date IDs on old photos?
Hi, trying to help out a guy on another (lightly trafficked) forum who seems unwilling or unable
to post here as we recommended he do. Regardless, our own curiosity has by now been piqued sufficiently that we're gonna post here anyway. He has a group of seven photos mostly devoid of any identifying information. We think we've solved a couple of them, but most have stumped us. Any certain identification of the pictured individuals, their team, the ballpark (when visible), and the approximate date the photo was taken would be hugely appreciated. We've annotated the pics with what we think we know -- please confirm, refute, or add... pic 1 -- we're pretty certain this is Benny Bengough in a photo taken between 1923 and 1926: http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=24865 pic 2 -- no idea on this guy, although we're probably stupid not to recognize him. High collar suggests pre-WWI, but the big G has us stumped. Can't match the uni to any major league team. Stadium look familiar to anybody? http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=24864 More to follow... |
pic 3 -- no idea on this guy either -- can't find any major league match from this era for the uniform.
Guy who has the photos inevitably thinks it's -- wait for it -- some guy nicknamed "Shoeless." The ironwork behind the seats looks familiar, though... http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=24863 pic 4 -- Boston Braves, 1924-'25-'26? http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=24862 still more ahead (below)... |
pic 5 -- we're guessing manager Jack Hendricks, from 1924 to 1929.
We might be out to lunch on that... http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=24861 Skipping 6 because it's oversized and might not load properly. pic 7 -- obviously Ty Cobb sliding. But who's the baseman? Presumably a spring training site -- any clues in the distance as to where? http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=24859 |
Lastly...
pic 6 -- name that Yankee. http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=24860 Again, enormous thanks for any help with any of these. |
That last Yankee looks like Henry/Hank Johnson to me. From what I remember, he was the last man to pitch to Ty Cobb (got him to pop up).
And that first fella is definitely Bengough. Graig |
Pic 4 is the Brooklyn Robins 1922-24
Pic 7 I would say White Sox |
Graig, thanks for your input! We appreciate the confirm on Bengough. Assuming you're correct on Johnson,
we'd think that as gaunt as he looks there, it must be a teenage Johnson at his first or second training camp. By the way, we don't post often on your project threads, so we'll take this opportunity just to say that we're genuinely as much in awe of your artwork as everyone else here rightfully is. Don, thanks as well for your input -- again! You've provided us a big assist on similar posts several times before. Chisox makes sense for pic 7 -- 1930 or later, then, with the dark cap. Amazing (and frustrating) that the photographer managed to shoot an angle that totally obscures crucial uniform details on so many of his shots. Not doubting you on pic 4, just curious as to what you see in that pic that says Brooklyn, not Boston. Is it that the big B appears to have been removed from the previous year's shirt, suggesting a 1920, '21, or '24 image? |
