BUYER BEWARE - Benderbroeth
This is the first time I've ever had this here, but I still feel the need to share with the rest of the board.
Last Friday, I agreed to purchase a 1955 Clemente PSA 1 From Benderbroeth, aka Edward Broeth. I paid immediately, and he immediately confirmed receipt, then let me know the card would ship the next day - Saturday. Saturday came and went without any notice - not a huge deal. But then Sunday passed, and Monday rolled around. Late Monday, I sent another message to Edward, asking for tracking. I was ignored. I sent another similar message Tuesday night, to which he replied the following: Hey, sorry i also collect autographs and i was super busy getting autographs, i will get you shipping info tomorrow, card has not been able to be sent out because i was getting some great autographs. Tony Bennett and James Taylor and Todd Rundgren. sorry for the delay. I replied expressing my displeasure at the fact that the card had not yet shipped, and the fact that I shouldn't have had to reach out repeatedly to get this information. Then Wednesday came and went without any shipping update. So this morning I messaged Edward with a simple message: tracking or return. Again, no reply. Approximately one hour ago, I sent him an email, letting him know he had one more hour to remedy the situation. Either get me tracking or a refund, or I was going to initiate a claim with PayPal, and inform the boards that he was a scammer. Edward has decided to ignore my offers at correcting the situation, so here we are. In my eyes, Edward is a scammer, a thief, and a liar. I have initiated a claim with PayPal, and I will never be doing business with him again. I would suggest steering clear of this one. |
He's always taken a while to get back to me, but has always followed through. I hope it works out

I know this may have nothing to do with anything, but how much was the card?

$310

That's the thing - he took the time to reply when the deal was being consummated.
He took the time to reply once more. But he can't take the time to ship my card? To issue my refund? C'mon... Quote:

I don’t know if this is helpful but...
I’ve never dealt with either the seller or the buyer here. In this community I tend to give the benefit of the doubt because this isn’t eBay and it feels more close-knit with Leon and others moderating and protecting the community of card collectors.
The seller was wrong to promise and not send the card, and to be more responsive about getting the sale than following through with shipping and post receipt of funds communication. And I have personally felt the disappointment of being excited to get a card and then having to wait for a card to be shipped or delivered. One of my favorite things is getting a n envelope with a vintage card in the mail. But all of that said, the delays described are not extreme for a person who is not a professional seller. It’s a baseball card not an organ for a transplant. I hope it works out to the buyers satisfaction either with a refund or immediate contact and shipment of the card. Good luck. |
I had one transaction with this person several years ago. After much goading - our transaction was completed- but it took a while. He was run off the PSA boards for similar issues. He is not a scammer or a thief- just seems to be very disorganized and slow at shipping, and also makes excuses about personal issues. I am pretty much sure you will get your item eventually-

I just sent him a PM to get his take. If he answers we will discuss. If he doesn't answer he won't be here any longer. He has been on the board a long time and I don't like to boot anyone without some explanation, especially when they have been here 9 yrs ....
Someone got booted yesterday for not answering a PM and then coming back to the board like there was no question ever asked (of a mod).....No one has to ever answer a moderator on this board. They just won't be here any longer. Their choice. We'll keep it as safe as possible but it's always caveat emptor....we'll leave the lights on for ya' ... and see what Ed says. Quote:

My only dealing with him was he won one of my auctions here on the Net54 Live auction thread. Out of all the auctions I had, he was the only one who didn't pay. Not a big deal for me, as I sold the items on Ebay for more money....but he did not pay, and that stuck out with me.

I guess I don't want him to get into trouble on my account. |
Really odd guy I must say. Wanted to buy something from me on the BST. Went back and fourth quickly on it until it came time to pay the agreed upon price. Then the emails stop... then he apologizes and says he needs more time to get the money together... then another week passes... then another... then he says he needs another week.. then I gave up. Replies from him come quick until it comes time for him to pay, then silence.

I bought the 52 Topps Yvars he was selling last week. I received the card and a tracking # via PM in what I would consider a timely manner. I might have had to ask about it once but right after I did he responded so I definitely don't think liar, thief, scammer are the right words. He might just be a little disorganized as others have said.
Best, Scott |
I have also received another PM of disappointing performance on this person's part on the BST. As of now he is not allowed there any longer. We'll see how it goes...
I should add that the seller PMd me and gave me tracking and a reason for what happened. He isn't allowed on the BST any longer as this has been going on, from what I can tell, for around 9 yrs. Nothing personal I am just not sure it's a good thing for he or the board at this point. He (hi Ed) is still allowed to participate in all other aspects of the board if he so chooses. Happy collecting. |
Reading through these is a mixed bag.
It sounds like I'm not the first to have an issue, though. Just the first to speak up. I feel like in a place like this, none of us should have to worry about our transactions. Thanks to Leon for trying to keep it that way. |

It is cheaper than the post office, free tracking and all graded cards are 4oz or under. Then just put the package in the mailbox, the post guy sends if for you and you are done. No need to even go to the post office. |
Deja Vu?

Update
Within the last minute, I received a PM from Edward with a tracking number.
I'll update once the card is in hand. In the meantime, I rescind the term "thief" from my description, but that is all. I still consider what he's done extremely wrong, dishonest, and not trustworthy at all. The silver lining is this is the first bad deal I've had here. Hopefully it'll be the last. |
Edward's original BST posting offered two cards - the Clemente RC and a 52T Mays. I was the buyer of the Mays. I purchased on the 1st of June. Card was very well packed and arrived today - the 8th. Not super quick - but I'm good with the delivery. I had not previously contacted Edward about delivery of the card - but also received a PM with the tracking info within the past hour (and coincidentally the post man arrived just a few minutes later). I imagine that PM was a result of the postings here and maybe a tickle from Leon. In any event... I'm happy with the card and there are no complaints from me about my deal with Edward.

I'm glad to hear you received it safe and sound.
Wanna sell it? Haha that's a good looking card. Quote:

> Wanna sell it? Haha that's a good looking card.
Nope. I've been under-bidder on I don't know how many lower grade Mays over the past dozen or so years - price constantly creeping up and me always trailing the market. Finally I've got it and I'm holding onto it. Already freed from that slab and taking his place next to Virgil Trucks in my binder. Not a blazer by any means but certainly good enough for my low to mid grade set. For quite a while it'd been the only "lower" number that was missing from my set. Still got a bunch of highs (including Mays and Mathews) that I'm chasing and that'll likely be a long time coming. |

And just like me, you're entitled to your opinion.

Seller
No experience with this seller but if you want to trade and/or sell cards you have to be prepared to ship and communicate in a timely fashion. If there is a delay, the buyer has a right to know how long..... To hold a few hundred dollars from someone without letting them know what's going on is just sloppy.... If you want to ship on your time schedule maybe you should not be selling/trading cards and should consign such items.....

I guess I was a lucky one, have purchased twice from Edward, was a little slow, but no issues at all. Good luck with transaction

I've done $10k+ biz with Edward-- always delivered. He is an odd fellow, but I don't feel it is right to boot him over this complaint.
