I guess I know which auction house to use if I ever decide to sell my woodcut collection.

Was wondering the same thing. Found mine by looking under the date not team or baseball and got the full issue for under 10 dollars.

Count me in as the “lucky one”. Not as the underbidder, but as the consignor. All of my woodcuts in the LOTG auction did AMAZING. And the prices were driven up well before the last night of the auction.

Postcard prices were extremely strong as well with most of the activity on the last day/night. But trust me when I say there were a few deals to be had too. I know one potential buyer who didn’t know the “new rules” and was shut-out on some big-ticket items because he got up at 2:30 EST and was surprised that the “auction had ended” for the items he was interested in. Oh well. Fun auction night for sure and the LOTG staff are pretty awesome too!

The prices you got for many of the Harper's woodcuts were crazy.

I got most of mine by buying full issues. I figured out pretty quickly after I started collecting them that the full issues tended to sell for way less than the individual woodcuts.

If I was a dealer, I would have been buying up full issues since the advent of ebay.

A lot of the difference in the ones from the original post are the difference in venue.

One was listed in a specialist auction for the subject matter, and was already nicely framed and well described.

The other was listed in Ebays art section. Mass published woodcuts aren't all that exciting as art, they're a rough equivalent to a printed repro of a famous painting, but like this one without the fame.
It was also poorly described. About like saying "old baseball card" without identifying the set or player. (I actually bought one described that way, a pretty beat George C Miller :) )

Not necessarily true. Many of the Harper's woodcuts were done by famous artists. During the War Between the States Alfred R. Waud, William Waud and Winslow Homer all contributed to the newspaper. Alfred R. Waud was the only artist at Gettysburg during the battle and provided the only 'action' images. There were no photographers there during the battle. The Winslow Homer woodcuts are very collectible and he put his initials in the image. His sketch called 'The Sharpshooter' was in the center of the paper, making it double the size of a full page. It is very collectible and valuable. The sketches for some of Homer's Harper's prints are still in existence. The Portland Maine Museum of Art had a great exhibit of them in the late 1980's.
