Iconic cards
Iconic cards T206 Wagner & 1952 Topps Mantle are without question monster cards to our hobby.
I would be willing to bet that most non-collectors are at least familiar with these images. Many may even have some idea to the value of the cards. My question. Besides these two cards what would you consider iconic cards to our hobby. Not thinking value is everything here. Some could are that the Billy Ripken “f face” is one. I don’t think the Lou is there yet. I would vote for his 33 Goudey above the exhibit. Plane beauty of the card and popularity of the type.

In the PreWar space, I concur on the CJs of Shoeless and Cobb. After those two, for iconic, maybe the 14 CJ Matty.
Perhaps the 33 Goudey Ruth #53 and the other three Ruths from the set, even over the M101, in terms of "iconic" to the broadest swath of people. Maybe the T206 Cobbs and D304 Cobb. As Peter said, perhaps the 41PB Joe D. I'm a Yankee and Gehrig fan but don't think he has any cards that compete with the above in the iconic category. The 33 Goudey over the 1925 Exhibit though, in terms of "iconic." PostWar, the 51B and 56T Mantles are pillars to many. The popular RCs are all iconic to their respective decades, i.e., Rose, Ryan, and Reggie. Schmidt and Brett. Then come the 80s guys. Canseco RR was huge. 89 Griffey. 84D Mattingly was a craze to so many boys in that era. 85 Mcgwire USA. Certainly some other images really capture that halcyon time, lol. 86TT Bo Jackson. |
FWIW....which isn’t much.... the Wikipedia entry for ‘baseball cards’ has displayed a ‘88 Goodwin Champions King Kelly, T206 Wagner, ‘33 Goudey Fox and a 1954 Bowman Vern Bickford. :)

I struggled between those myself given the 34 IMO looks better with the closeup and has a lower pop than the 33. I actually own a 34 and not the 33. But I honestly think the 33 is more popular in our hobby so it gets the nod between the two. |
How about those which showed up in TV shows and movies?
The prop (baseball card) used must have been known in general to the casual audience. T206 Wildfire Schulte (move: "Diminished Capacity") 1951 Bowman Willie Mays (ST: DS9 - ep."In The Cards") 1952 Topps Andy Pafko (movie: "Cop Out") 1962 Topps Roger Maris (ST:TNG - ep. "The Most Toys" - the card used belonged to Gene Roddenberry. I would LOVE to have that card.) |

In the Gehrig world...I believe the 34 goudy portrait to be the quintessential iconic gehrig card hands down.

Aside from those mentioned I'd add the e90-1 Jackson, 55 clemente, and 48 Paige. If the standard is those outside of the hobby would recognize the card I'd guess the 33 Ruth #144 and 86 fleer Jordan would be at the top of the list.

When I first read the title, I thought it was "ironic cards," and was very confused when reading the replies. Funny how one letter sure changes perspective.
As far as the question goes, I would say the Clemente is iconic. |

The Mays in ds9 wasn't actually a real card, the back was blank. Kind of cool that it was part of a major story line though. I remember an episode of family matters from when I was a kid and Urkel has a mint 52 Mantle he trades for something. I also remember him saying it was worth 25k at the time. |
As far as iconic in general, I would bet that a decent amount of people would recognize a ‘54 aaron (it was in the sandlot), maybe a ‘33 Goudey Ruth, ‘89 UD ken Griffey jr, Jordan rookie, and maybe a Red Cobb because of those finds in the news. Also maybe a Baltimore news Ruth
As far as iconic to us collectors that no one else probably knows about, T210 joe Jackson, Cracker Jack Cobb, ‘33 Goudey Lajoie etc. |

In my opinion, any one (if not all) of these GOODWIN CHAMPIONS (N162) are the "elite". The artwork and the lithography on these cards is at its best.
Especially, the Mike "King" Kelly card. Note the stormy-looking clouds the artist painted behind Kelly (perhaps to match his "stormy personality"). Maybe some people don't realize that it was a card, but the 1985 Nike promo card of Michael Jordan in the Jumpman pose would be right there with the Wagner T206 and 52T Mantle, IMO. The Jumpman logo that came from that card is ubiquitous.
