Molly's Game,, superb Idris Elba, sexy and superb Jessica Chastain.
And a rollicking script based on an autobiography.
Poker players will probably love this one. And that was only one reason that I did.

Are we recommending current movies only, or classic favorites as well?

I heard "Dunkirk" was good, though I wasn't really able to see it yet, been busy with work, but I've been hearing good reviews about it.

I saw Dunkirk and it is excellent.

Man, the more reason for me to see it. :)

One of my favorite movies is World's Fastest Indian. Anyone that is into motorcycles or cars will probably like it.

I only watch really old movies.
I’ll get around to seeing these newer movies like Dunkirk when I’m old (too late?:p)

Last night I re-watched “ Christmas in Connecticut (1945)“ which is a screwball comedy / part romance movie.

The night before was another comedy starring one of the greatest actors ever, Edward G. Robinson “A Slight Case of Murder” (1938) , a few nights before that was “Larceny Inc” (1942) also with EGR. He had a real comedic knack even though he was more known for dramatic roles.

I have a few days off during the holidays, meaning I can stay up later and browse the offerings on my Turner Classic Movies app.
Beyond this site and email that app is what I use this IPAD for the most!

Ex Machina? Is that the one with Oscar Isaac?

Agree, a great movie. And I'm not into motorcycles or cars. Just thought it was a great story with Anthony Hopkins as some old fart being able to accomplish something when the establishment told hm he couldn't.

Hell or High Water. Think it came out in 2016. Awesome movie not many people saw.

I always recommend Almost Famous to people if you are a fan of 70s rock and music journalism.

Anything by Richard Linklater.

I'll watch Christmas in Connecticut for the first time this weekend. I'm a huge Barbara Stanwyck fan. Two of her best I'd recommend: Double Indemnity, and The Lady Eve.

What kinds of films do you all like? My plan is to write about film history, so this is right in my wheelhouse.

I love They All Laughed. Really underrated homage to the screwball comedy. John Ritter, Audrey Hepburn (her last film), Ben Gazara and Dorothy Stratten (also her last film). Dorothy looked absolutely luminous. I think she would have been a huge star. She had real screen presence, and she was very serious about her craft.

Peter Bogdanovich is somebody I'd really like to meet. His encyclopedic knowledge of film is pretty much legendary at this point. Also, What's Up, Doc?, Paper Moon and The Last Picture Show rank among the finest American films of the 1970s.

I love the movie, The Game with Michael Douglas and Sean Penn.

Just be sure to pay attention, as there is a lot going on in the movie.

A better than I expected somewhat recent movie (not Coen) is "Hacksaw Ridge"

At the movie rental business I worked at, my fathers, we specialized in older and odd/rare titles. Our inventory had almost 20k different titles.

Some of my favorite, I like horror, sci-fi and ones where the bad guy wins.

Brain Dead, mind bending Bill Pullman film.
Fallen, Denzel at his best.
Altered States, William Hurt masterpiece.
Falling Down, Michael Douglas portraying how all people have felt at one time.
Soylent Green, the great Charlton Heston, referencing women as furniture. Wow has time changed.

All-Time favorite horror/gore/comedy...guy straps a lawnmower to his chest and walks through a room of undead. Brilliant and hilarious scene.

Dead Alive

On break for the holidays, had to order up The Big Country to watch again. Western, but much bigger than "just" a western.

Thought Hacksaw Ridge was phenomenal, really liked Dunkirk.

My friends keep telling me to see Thor, it's not just a silly comic book movie, supposedly really funny, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

If you're ever in the mood for dumb/funny/action, you can't beat Big Trouble in Little China!

Not a great movie but a movie that is greatly enjoyable if you don't need cinematic genius with your films:
Midnight Madness, is as enjoyable as any movie i have ever seen but it is silly 1980s style humor. Something for which I am admittedly a sucker .

Just saw The Big Sick,, if you like really good rom coms then this is for you. It scored a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I saw Big Sick, and thought it was great.

I saw this on Monday. Loved it. Aidy Bryant is very very funny. (not just in this movie, I think she's a riot on SNL).

Dunkirk ( Dunkerque) is a very realistic presentation of a major event at the start of WWII.....it is very highly recommended.

Then follow it up with Darkest Hour (currently showing in most theatres). This movie portrays Winston Churchill's early days
as Prime Minister in the Spring of 1940 and his struggle with the "appeasement" politicians which he had to deal with leading
up to the events in Dunkirk. Gary Oldman (Churchill) deserves an Academy Award for his performance.

Dunkirk was excellent. Saw it in the theater. Was rivieting. Was amazing to me how little dialogue there was in spors. It had the effect of really putting you in the middle of it all, which is sort of the point of any movie. Don't need a ton of dialogue on a good war movie. Let the action tell the story.

Well, I like OLD movies, so here's a few. First of all, TCM is running a six movie marathon on New Year's Eve of The Thin Man movies with Myrna Loy and William Powell. I have had a little crush on Myrna Loy since I was a boy (and my beautiful wife has hair that is exactly the same style she wore in the 30's). If you like funny movies with clever banter, these might be for you.

I also love The Big Sleep with Bogart.

Oh, and one other... I was at the Goodwill store the other day and picked up a still wrapped VHS of Breaking Away. I've seen it a dozen times, but for 49 cents, I couldn't pass it up. We watched it again last night. What a wonderful movie.

There are many more but these come to mind.


The Shawshank redemption, with Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. Excellent, much watch movie.

Man on Fire, my favorite Denzel Washington movie. I love when justice wins!

Seven, with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman again. Great actor!

Forest Gump, of course.

Saving Private Ryan, another excellent Tom Hanks movie.

The silence of the Lambs. Jodie Foster.

I'll have to make it to see Dunkirk. Aside from the comments here, there are many who speak very highly of it.

I am on the outside on Dunkirk, not a fan.

Did take kids to Ohio State Reformatory, where Shawshank was filmed. One of my favorite movies, kids hadn't seen it but enjoyed visiting the prison.

Somehow this one snuck by me for a few years, but I saw "The Book Thief" a few days ago. The young lady in the lead role (Sophie Nelisse) was absolutely wonderful. A ten hanky ending for me I'm afraid, but still thought it a beautiful film.

I haven't seen Gran Torino yet. They just showed Josey Wales a few nights ago.

I'm with Irv, The Shawshank Redemption is the best movie I've ever seen. Momento is a close second. It will blow your mind if you've never seen it. I enjoyed A Time to Kill as well. One of few movies that's just as good as the book.

Just saw The Post. Outstanding, although I'm biased. I would pay to watch a two-hour infomercial on toenail fungus ointment if Meryl Streep was in it.

I rented a movie from Netflix, but did not notice that it was a foreign (Danish) film.

Luck was with me and it was outstanding! About a piece of history I knew nothing about.

I highly recommend 'Land of Mine'.

A good recent release that the Mrs. and I both enjoyed is "Molly's Game". But only if you're into poker, gambling, illegal activity, and sports (cannot imagine anyone here is into those things).

Plus she is pretty easy on the eyes.
