One too many baths for Babe?
The colors on this card are usually leaping off the cardboard.

WHATEVER!!!!! It's one of the hobby's finest examples dammit!!!!!
|
I'll take Leon's . . . . .
|
Wow that is one ugly card on the front, the back looks nice though.

It's an old PSA flip - could it have been graded 20 years ago and been sitting out exposed to sunlight, to result in that appearance? Just trying to think of how a card with that appearance gets a 7...

At about 5% of the price, this PSA graded beater has better color and a lot more character:

I certainly agree thought that "Ruth is among the most iconic athletes in the history of sports and has an immense following."
|
Actually, it looks like it's missing red ink to me, which is fascinating.

Looks like it got a lot of sunlight to me.

Card was obviously exposed to light over a long period of time. Even the flip has faded. Compare the color of the flip to another PWCC PSA card and you'll see the difference in the redness.
|
Missing.....
It is missing a color pass. Red is my guess like another board member stated. If it had sat in the sun that long, the borders would also be discolored to an extent. It just looks too even to be sun discoloration. Its possible it sat in the sun but who in there right mind would do such a thing? I realize it could have been displayed near a window but my money is on missing a layer or 2 of color.
Whoever paid that much has a few things missing upstairs and now has over $10,000 missing from his or her wallet! Peace, Mike |
"The offered '7' ranks among the finest examples we've brokered in our tenure and is also among the hobby's finest copies."
I'd hate to see the ones they've brokered which were not among the finest examples in their tenure. |

Whoever bought this for 10K prob doesn’t care one whit what any of us are posting. Nor does PWCC.

To paraphrase the great Don Rickles, if that card is “all around fantastic” I have cataracts.
|
Probably faded from light. Maybe sitting in a display under direct lights. Heritage sold a group of these cards earlier this year. They must have all been from the same collection.

Ok, just curious, how much did it sell for at Heritage?

wow that's a real eye opener to see what sunlight over a long period of time can do! Agreed that $10k for that card seems like a trip to crazy town. Then again I might have gone a little overboard when paying half that for this one.

I'm not sure why the UV Protection infused PSA CASE did not prevent this from happening? ;)

The 7 in question needs to be re-slabbed at something like a 2 for the extreme fading alone. |

looks like a bidder graciously bumped it from 5555 to 9150 before backing away. Either way the seller lost money.
|
This is one of the biggest fears of openly displaying cards. UV is hell on cards. Do any of the cases used by the grading companies really protect cards from this problem?
|
Maybe they just hit the "reverse enhance" button on their scanner.
All joking aside that is one faded glory of a "7." Thank God for the plastic peepee measuring contest that makes this a 10K card. |

That was actually me. I retracted my bid when I found out that the color was wrong from the heritage auction description. There was no mention of it on pwcc and they said how strong of a grade it was.
|
Wow, a reasonable explanation that does not reek of a "conspiracy theory". How do those of you feel who jumped all over this?
Indeed, worthy of some attention at least... |

-1 for failing to mention the fade Back to even |

I think it should have been mentioned, but I don't fault them for not mentioning it. After all, does something that obvious really even need to be mentioned? Anybody can see that it's faded. It's not like it's a hidden crease or something. We all saw it. But, hey, if it throws PWCC under the bus, lets go for it, right? |
Sure it's obvious but in light of the glowing praise thrown at the card it bears mentioning IMO. You have yours, I have mine.
I would feel the same way regardless of the seller by the way. At the end of the day as long as the number on the flip is not faded, what does it matter, right? :) |
Regardless the description is a reflection of the seller. I'm surprised they didn't slap their pwcc certified looks great for the grade moniker on it as well? To say it is one of the nicest of its kind without mentioning its obvious negatives...is a poor reflection on the seller.

It's as if y'all thought, "Ok, the light faded explanation makes sense, so what other dirt can we dig up? Oh yeah, let's nail him on the fluffy auction description." That's it for me. I'm going to a card show at Sheraton Houston West this morning, because I actually like cards, not sitting around complaining about them and those that sell them. Y'all have fun bashing sellers today. I'm going to go enjoy the hobby. |
