Puerto Rican League Signed Ball - Help with Sigs & Year
6 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, I need some help with a signed ball. This ball was purchased directly from former MLB player Tom Lawless. He got this ball signed when he was playing winter ball in the 1980's but can't remember much else about it. Can anyone help with the signatures? Anyone important? Value of it? I am trying to get as much info before making it available for sale. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Tony |
Tom Lawless signed the ball, along with Milt Thompson below him.
Al Jackson signed the sweetspot. Steve |
I see Edwin Nunez, Edwin Rodriguez and Jose "Cheo" Cruz.

The signatures belong to the players who played for the Ponce Lions team in the Puerto Rico Winter League. Rickey Henderson played for this team in the 1980-81 winter campaign and broke the record for stolen bases in a season. Rickey's signature is not on the ball, I think the ball probably corresponds to the 1984-85 team (maybe 83-84).
Besides the players already mentioned, I recognize right away these former major leaguers: Edwin Rodriguez (also managed the Marlins) Ed Romero Luis DeLeon Eddie Vargas Pepe Mangual And little known minor leaguers: Miguel Alicea Frank Vazquez Lazaro Vilella Roberto Diaz George Borges |
Thanks for all the info guys, much appreciated. Does the ball have any value? I'm sure someone somewhere would probably like it but are they few and far between? Should I offer it here or go straight to ebay?
Thanks again, Tony |
Second photo second signature is Rick Anderson. Probably the pitcher 1986-88 Mets and Royals.

Actually, that looks like the signature of the Rick Anderson (there were two of them), who pitched for the Yankees in 1979, and the Mariners in 1980. He died in 1989. The other Rick Anderson (who pitched for the Mets in 1986 and the Royals in 1987-88), wrote his "A" like the capital printed A, not like a "little" a. There are examples of both signatures on ebay.
