PSA - The Experts
A long time baseball card icon (Lew Lipset) once told me: "Dan, no one knows everything about everything" and he is correct.
If you asked me to identify a year of a baseball card that was issued after 1978 I couldn't... I wouldn't even have an educated guess. So a dealer that deals in mainly shiny stuff (Topps and Bowman), acquires some old cards and doesn't know what they are so he submits them to an "Expert Grading Company" for identification and a grade. The results are comical: Ebay item: 142478253021 and 122654210526 These are not even close to W517 minis, W517 minis have their names in block print not script. Also, these 1929 Leader Novelty cards all have their top and bottom borders trimmed off so should be authentic at best. If you don't know what something is PSA... why not ask one of your vintage card customers? Dan Mckee |
Hey Dan
Hope all is well. As we chatted about there are 4 of them. It seems some of the esoteric sets get misidentified rather often by TPGs.... https://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odk...=w517&_sacat=0 . |
Yes there are 4.... I was trying to be nice :)

I've been called a few times by PSA. When I told them I would start charging a consulting fee they magically stopped :)

My dad would say the Latin names of plants when we were walking outside. Me not knowing plants, for all I knew he was making up gibberish names.
|
They grade diamonds, too...right?
|
Dan, is this one on eBay also NOT a W517 mini? https://www.ebay.com/itm/1931-W517-S...IAAOSwDk5UJRbV

Val that’s a mini

Gotta add some cards to this thread. :)

Besides misidentification by the grading company itself, I believe a certain amount is created by the collector misidentifying the raw cards they send in. Ideally a grading company that authenticates cards would be on top of such mistakes and adjust accordingly, but we all know that the current grading system is anything but ideal.

You can totally sympathize with PSA when the artwork is so similar as between the W517 and the Leader Novelty cards

My dad always said the definition of an expert was "someone from outta town." There you go.
Thanks for the laugh Dan. |
