Cards that never were....what would you have liked to see?
As a collector of various cards and sports over the years, I have many times wondered why a particular person did NOT appear in a certain set or series of cards.
Not sure if this has been discussed before, but though I would ask, what are some of the 'Cards that never were" of someone that you would have like to have seen produced. (can be any sport) Since this is my thread...I will mention two. Baseball - I would have to say a T205 Sam Crawford. This was the height of his playing days, a beautiful issue, yet sadly...no T205 Wahoo. As a collector of golf Cards, a 1930 W.D and H.O. Wills - Bobby Jones. They picked Walter Hagen for the issue, but not Jones oddly enough, as by then Walter was pretty much done with highly competitive golf. This was Jones' grand slam year and he was one of the main figures in all of sport much less golf. Would like to hear your nominations. |
1934 Goudey Ruth.....(and not a premium, a regular card)
|
Stan the Man
1951 Bowman Stan Musial and 1952-58 Topps Musial. Has always bugged me that he's not in these sets (he does have a '58 Topps All-Star card, but not a regular issue).
|
T205 Joe Jackson
|
T206 Joe Jackson; either portrait or action pose. I bet it would be an expensive card!

Man, if Musial was in 1952 Topps, that would've been an iconic card! |
1915 CJ Ruth, 34 Goudey Ruth, 51 Bowman Joe DiMaggio
|
33 Delong Babe Ruth
33 Tatoo Orbit Ruth and Gehrig 33 George C Miller Ruth and Gehrig 34 Goudey Mel Ott E93, 95, or 98 Walter Johnson T205 Lajoie |
1952 Topps, Ted Williams, Ralph Kiner, Satchel Paige, Whitey Ford, Nellie Fox, Don Newcomb and of course, Stan Musial.
Dimaggio is another one, although he announced his retirement before the start of the 52 Topps production. |
To add to what's here, Honus Wagner in t sets other than t206. 1952T, in addition to Musial, Ted Williams, Ralph Kiner and Satchel Paige. 1953 Bowman was such a beautiful set, but too small. More Hofers including Williams, Mays and Paige. Same for1954 and 1955 Topps, specifically Mantle.

For me it would be
T210 & T209-2 Jim Thorpe T210 Cowan Richmond same pose as his T209 will do! |
First thing that comes to mind for me is a Cracker Jack George Gibson.
Sure wish he was in one (or both) of those sets. Cheers, Richard. |
1957 Killebrew
|
The two I would love to see...
T209-2 Jim Thorpe Zeenut Ted Williams (Doerr too I suppose) |

Like has already been mentioned a Ted Williams in the sets he is missing from. Here is a custom 52 Topps Ted Williams made by a fellow member. It is one of the nicest I have seen.:)
|
1957 Jackie Robinson in a giants uniform
|
T206 Wagner action shot. Also a T204, T205 and T3 Wagner.
|
T206 team cards would have been pretty neat also. Although probably hard to recognize individual players.

T218 Baseball series or more T227 Baseball subjects. A t204 Cobb and Matty would be something also...
|
1936/37 Zeenut Ted Williams!
Steve |
1951 Bowman Eddie Gaedel
1965 Satchel Paige 1946 sports exchange Pete Gray I guess either the Handel or Paige could have been one year later in which case make it a 1952 topps Eddie Gaedel, sports exchange is multiple years so it would still apply Also diamond star Ruth and Gehrig and 1934 goudey Ruth. |
Like many others, I'd love to see the missing Williams, Mantle, and Musial cards from 52-56. Williams especially - like others whose careers overlapped the wars, he has relatively few cards for such a long career.
|
One other card that would have been nice would be a 1947 Tip Top of Willard Brown with the St. Louis Browns.
|
54 Topps Mantle
55 Topps Mantle 52 Topps Williams 34 Goudey Ruth |
Any...
Negro league card actually issued in America. While I love all the Latin. Cards, it always makes me sad to think that all the amazing players were never commerated in USA cardboard. Imagine... Gibson, Paige, Wells’s, leoanard, Williams.... etc. WOW.

Cards that Never Were
Here's my wish list in no particular order of significance although I think a majority of the hobby would agree that the most incredible card would be a 1915 Cracker Jack Babe Ruth "true" rookie card.
Joe T. 1915 CJ Ruth 1933 DeLong Ruth 1934 Goudey Ruth T206 Jackson T206 Speaker w/M116 Portrait Pose T204 Cobb, Wagner & Matty E94 Matty & Jackson T227 Matty, WoJo & Jackson (wow...those would be amazing!) E126 Gehrig Various major "E" cards of Walter Johnson |
1954 Topps Mantle.
|
Agreed on the 1954 and 1955 Topps Mantle. One that I would like to see is a 1963 Topps Maury Wills. Not only was it a significant and revolutionary season, I have met Wills a few times and have found him to be nice and courteous, which is the opposite of his described persona.
