What's your favorite 1978 Topps card?
Are there any 1978 Topps cards that you prefer?
My HOF choice is Robin Yount. http://shepherdexpress.com/imgs/medi...opps+yount.jpg There are many great common photos in the 1978 set. I voted for Joe Ferguson. https://smedcards.files.wordpress.co...s1978-226f.jpg |

That is an easy one...Bump Wills(circle variation) with an honorable mention to Jerry Johnson (red mark variant).

Reggie Jackson is a classic.

Doug Ault is my favorite, with many/any of the better action shots coming in a close 2nd (Milan, Randle, Healy, Jackson). If only his career had taken a different path, what an amazing card that would be today.
HOF wise, I might lean towards Murray because I love the trophy cards, but Reggie is a great one and I have always really liked the Rod Carew for some reason. The AS badge doesn't hurt for sure and I agree, one of the better Topps used, although I liked all of them.Attachment 287881 |
Bonus with the Doug Ault card--Thurman Munson crouched behind home plate.

I really love the set...first one I collected as a kid. Even helped me learn cursive. Murray, Rice, Reggie, and Guidry! But not Kingman!!

Got to go with the '78 Burger King Tigers Jack Morris stand alone.

Bob Lemke's '78 Paul Molitor custom is another favorite.

Of course the Reggie is a classic. I also liked the Mick - Mickey Rivers.
Ever notice how many of the Yankee cards were action shots taken from the first base dugout side? - Jackson (2), Chambliss, Rivers, Nettles, Lyle (2), Guidry, Munson, Hunter, Gullett, White. |

Is this one yours Ben? I have a couple signed without Diaz and one with it in pen, but that one has the best Diaz sig I have seen on a multi-signed. Beaut. |

Mickey Rivers is a philosopher; one of my favorite quotes of all time is: "Ain't no sense worryin' about the things you got control over, 'cause if you got control over 'em, ain't no sense worryin'. And ain't no sense worryin' about the things you don't got control over, 'cause if you don't got control over 'em, ain't no sense worryin'. - Mickey Rivers |

These are the best cards?
Wow. This set is even uglier than I remembered! What a truly putrid offering by Topps. Right up there with 1981 and 1979. |
love the Eddie Murray rookie.

This one is my favorite 1978 card just because it reminds me of both the 1982 Topps Seaver All-Star card and a specific Christy Mathewson photo - a copy of which I have been searching for a number of years.
Does anyone remember the picture I mean? There as several of Christy in his 'warm-up coat' - but the one I'm looking for is like these two in that it appears to be a cold windy day causing a kind of worn expression on his face. Attachment 288140 Attachment 288141 |

And while the selection of photos themselves is decent (some have been shown here), the actual printing execution of the photos is downright awful. It's not even a technology thing. Look at the printing quality of the '60s cards and compare it with these. It's almost like Topps was doing laser printing in the '60s and decided to revert back to dot-matrix for the late '70s. Or it could be the photographers were only provided Kodak Instamatics to take the picture. Who knows. |

I have been looking for a second copy of this Ryan card for myself for a while....unless I missed one, of the nearly 500 copies available/sold on ebay/comc, there were none. |

1978 was my first set - in fact the first cards I ever owned came as a small uncut panel in a spring 1978 edition of Dynamite Magazine. I've always felt the images in the set were, generally, some of the best of that era. Here are a few favorites (and I have a lot).
First the Joy of the Game - Rice, Simmons and Lopez, all just looking like they're happy to be there. |

Next up - the catchers. Looking determined and gritty, real ballplayers...

The Millan was taken 7/17/77 The Randle was taken 7/31/77 |

And for general aesthetics -
The Brett for just being a great image of the future hall of famer at a young age The White for being a good action shot with Fisk coming up out of his crouch as the ball is put into play The Ault for having a unique perspective as well as Munson behind the plate, looking like he's about to lift his mask to spit The Cruz, for capturing a speedster contemplating whether to go The Collins for the interesting play of light and shadow in the batting cage The Chiles for the nice silhouette effect (like a number of other Twins cards like Kusick and Ford) The Coleman just because And the Garner for Chuck Tanner barking something in the background |

I agree with Bob, the Murray is my favorite 78. I can't help buying them when I see them cheap either so I have a few now.

I agree with this answer 100%
