Early Black Baseball In Philadelphia
Yesterday NPR aired a feature that mentioned a post Civil War Black Baseball pioneer named Octavius Catto. Mr. Catto formed the Pythians team that played from 1866 to 1872. The feature devotes a relatively short time discussing the Pythians and mostly discusses Mr. Catto's other civil rights efforts and struggles.

There is a woodcut of Catto in Harpers Weekly which had an article on his funeral- unfortunately it's the same issue that covered the great Chicago fire and therefore impossible to find without paying a mint
