Mantle Game Used Bat Question
Hi all,
Saw this listing on eBay and two questions came to mind. First, how did the bat come to look like this? It doesn't look like it was broken but doesn't look cut either. Second, is it possible to authenticate part of a bat without actually being able to tell the weight and length and without being able to see any writing that was on the bat? It's an interesting piece and would look great restored (I am assuming you could by a store model bat and try to piece together a full bat), but I am just a bit confused as to what it is. Thoughts are appreciated. I won't be bidding/purchasing due to funds, but more just curious. Thank you, Chris Ps. I don't know the seller and am not offering an opinion as to them or the company that authenticated the bat but rather just trying to figure it all out. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yankees-Mick...cAAOSw6KVZgmHN |
that sold at Goldin
https://goldinauctions.com/LotDetail...entoryid=32056 a couple of months ago, and then at Iconic about a week or so ago: http://iconicauctions.com/Mickey_Man...-LOT65840.aspx Funny thing is the winner of the auction and the auction house are both in Scottsdale, what are the chances? |
As far as the damage goes, my guess is the handle broke off from use and then the barrel end sat in a damp place for years and the wood decayed and rotted off.

I asked mears about this when is was listed in goldin. I asked how can you tell it was game used by Mickey Mantle and not a pro stock/team index bat. Troys reply was " I don't believe we addressed team index or personal order."
So I asked goldin auctions at the time how they determined Mickey Mantle used the bat and they replied back saying "not much to say it's a broken piece of the bat that sold about three years ago on mears auctions as a "game used bat Barrel" I can't believe someone would pay that much for something like that. And also maybe it now gives people who fake stuff another route to go. Just break off the handle and people will still give it a LOA as game used. |
6 grand, huh? No, thanks.
