Black bat question
I was cruising on ebay looking at 1940 world series items because i am a huge reds fan(i know they are horrible) and came across a 1940 Brooklyn dodgers black bat and i thought these where only made for the world series champs? If i am correct in my assumption then why would they make one for the runner up team in tge NL? Is it like the phantom press pins teams had made building upto the world series or a fantasy piece.

Black Bats
I'm not an expert on the black bats, but from my understanding the bats were made for both teams. The winning team had World Champions, or something similar, and the other team bat stated NL or AL Champions.

The detroit tigers won the american league that year so i dont know why the dodgers have a black bat when they didnt win anything
|
Both teams got bats, one displaying World Series Champions the other is American/National Champions. So each team did actually win something, they won their respective league for that season.
From my understanding they were made for not only players and coaches but some team officials also. They were made from 1934 through 1998. Great piece for the team or player collector, I love mine, they are beautiful in hand. |
Some people seem to be missing the point: Cincinnati won the NL and later the World Series while the Tigers won the AL and lost the World Series. Both of those teams should have black bats.
The OP is asking about a Brooklyn Dodgers black bat. The Dodgers did NOT win the NL and did NOT go to the Series so the OP is asking WHY the Dodgers would have a black bat made for them? David |
As gifts to players and or season ticket holders

I think I've seen black (and brown) bats for just League champs before.
|
The seller was misrepresenting the bat as a world champion black bat but must have been made as a keep sake for the team. The bat looks just like the champions bat but does not have world series champs or nl champs on the bat. I was just saying that the the reds won the 1940 series over detroit that year with the dodgers coming in a distant second to the reds.
