1989 Topps baseball color variations
I noticed the team banner color at bottom of front of some cards to vary. I am new to the forum, so I don't know if this has been addressed. I searched online and didn't find mention of the color variations. For example, the red Cardinals banner is orange, akin to the orange Orioles team banner on some Cardinals cards. There are slight variations in the actual red ink used, but this is a total different color. It seems to only occur in the Luis Alicea cards. So Alicea has the team name Cardinals in an orange banner, not the usual red.

I'm sure it has been discussed somewhere online. I know the Dodger cards appear in a small spectrum of colors from dark blue to a purple.

Thanks. It is such a Stark contrast so it stood out when sorting.

Here's an example...
One appears red, while the other is orange. ...though on the "red" version - the entire card seems darker than its counterpart. (That's a print scratch on the card - not a hair!)

I am not sure about currently, but Ben is right that there was a period when several sellers were offering variants of the banners in the 89 set on eBay regularly, and there are a bunch of them. It may be if you look long enough you could find at least some variation in the color on every card in the set.
The 85s have some of that too, particularly in Phillies card banners |
Cool. Guessing these are just common problems in the era of running the printing presses Dawn til dusk. Didn't know if it was some kind of thing people hadn't seen. Thanks.
I know I didn't notice the Mets variation. |
