I'll get the month started with some cast iron figurals

early Spalding 'flat top' football helmet...
 

Guys........I picked this 'flat top' up last weekend at a local antique show and finally got around to photographing it. It has a nice Spalding patch on the inside and is in great shape, except for the missing chin strap. This is the earliest football helmet I've ever owned, as it dates c. 1900-1910 according to my research...........Matt

Killer football gear.

Picked up my dream jersey today, 1962 Mets flannel. Worn by #23 Joe Christopher then recycled to #56, probably in Spring Training in 1963 or 1964.

Well Thanks Mark! July being the month of the National I hope will be pretty sweet for pickups. At least that's what I hope for the attendees.
Matt...I have absolutely no clue about football equipment but that looks like a killer helmet. I assume the style is rather rare??

Super pickup Jim. Those 62 Mets are near impossible.

Got this little circa 1890 "Boxing Monkeys"advertising giveaway booklet today...put out by McLaughlins Coffee. 3 1/4" X 4 1/4", 12 pages...posting a few pages below...has 4 color illustrations...plus 6 pages with smaller b&w pictures...accompanied by story telling rhyming verse...Pretty small format for me as I usually like bigger books...but the quality spoke to me...nice color chromo graphics and the condition is great...Never seen one of these...I like late 19th early 20th century children's sports books long as they don't set me back too much...below link to another one, "Freddy's Football" I did a feature on...

This actually found me at a flea market on Saturday. It's been a real looooong time since I've found something like this at a flea market!

September 28, 1960 Boston Red Sox ticket stub and Ted Williams signed, scored program. Teddy Ballgame's last ball game and, of course, a walk-off home run of another kind.

Spalding Football Head Harness
 

Matt,

Your football helmet is a Spalding No. C flattop head harness that dates from between 1909 and 1911. 1909 was the first year that the No. C had vertical leather strips on the rear neck protector, and in 1912 the neck protector was changed to more of a flap than just an extension of the back of the head harness.

I'm certainly no expert but I had never seen these before, since I collect Mets player pinbacks, I couldn't pass them up.

I only heard the name Wilbur Huckle because he was Tom Seavers first roommate, I never realized what a fan favorite he was.

I'm happy you found them.

Guess I have something else to search for.

1951 World Series photo
 

Recent pick up from the last RMY auction. I really like photos of Yankee Stadium, especially when adorned for the World Series.

What appealed to me about this one is that it is from Game 1 of the 1951 World Series and shows rookie Willie Mays coming to bat
and rookie Mickey Mantle playing right field. That made this one special to me as there likely are not too many game action photos
from their rookie year with both Mantle and Mays in them

Mantle is small out there in right field, but is easier to see when holding the photo in hand.

Thought I'd sprinkle a little on the football side. This oddity arrived today. A circa 1954, Los Angeles Rams King Crusher bucket hat that once belonged to a man name Henry Schmidt, who was head athletic trainer at Santa Clara University for 50 years. He also worked with the L.A. Rams and San Francisco 49ers.

This is one of two hats I picked up from the Schmidt estate, both with dozens of signatures of former Ram and 49er greats and various other dignitaries.

No idea of the origin and no certificate of authenticity but there are so many diverse names on here...known and unknown...Hard to believe they would be fake. Even if they are, I'm still happy to own it.

Signatures include...Norm Van Brocklin, Elroy Hirsch, Tom Fears, Tank Younger, Les Richter, Hampton Pool, Big Daddy Lipscomb, Woodley Lewis, Duane Putnam, Charlie Toogood, Bob Boyd, Harry Thompson, Tom Dahms, Don Paul, Hall Haynes, Skeet Quinlan, Harland Svare, Dan Reeves, Tex Schramm, Eddie Kotal, Bill Battles, John Sauer, Dick Voris, Ralph Weaver, Ed Beatty (Rams 1954 first round draft pick)...All players or coaches with the Rams.

Also....Bob Kelley, Rams play by play man from their inception in 1937 through 1965

49ers include...John Henry Johnson, Joe Perry, Red Hickey, Buck Shaw, Y.A. Tittle, Jim Cason, Bill Stits, Phil Bengston (Vince Lombardi's successor in Green Bay).

Other football signatures include...Bert Bell, Doak Walker, Art Donovan, Gino Marchetti, Joe Schmidt, Lou Creekmur, Roger Zatkoff, Lavern Torgeson

Several other signatures, I've yet to identify.

The hat is also inscribed:

Love that pic Jack. I have always wished I could have seen at least one game at the old Stadium. Sadly, my first game at Yankee Stadium wasn't until June 1st, 1980 for Bat Day. Long after the stadium was remodeled.

That might be the prettiest of all the "Golden Era" Glove Boxes. Either that particular Mantle, or the Rogers Hornsby from about 20 years prior.

Dave Morehead signed no-hit tickets
 

I finally filled another gaping hole in my no-hitter ticket collection.
After searching for this ticket for 45 years, I finally found it in Ontario, Canada of all places. A true global search...
To be honest, I wasn't sure that I ever would. More on that later...

On September 16, 1965 Red Sox pitcher Dave Morehead made history by hurling a 2-0 no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians. 23 year-old Morehead came extremely close to pitching a perfect game; his only blemish was a walk that he issued on a 3-2 count in the 2nd inning.

Back to why this ticket was so challenging to locate. In 1965 the hapless 9th place Red Sox were wedged in between seasons where they were competitive.

According to the official box score, Morehead's no-hitter on September 16th had a miniscule 1,247 fans in attendance. Peter Gammons wrote about Morehead's no-hit game many years later in the Boston Globe and said that there were probably no more than 500 fans actually in the seats as he was one of them...

Finding any ticket to this game was a true snipe hunt, but finding two of them including one that was actually vintage signed on the back by Dave Morehead and his shortstop Eddie Bressoud the day of the no-hitter is downright crazy! The 2nd ticket was signed by Red Sox great Tony Conigliaro. All 3 of these players (Morehead, Bressoud and Conigliaro) were part of the starting nine during Morehead's no-hitter.

My no-hit ticket collection now stands at 205 tickets to different no-hitters dating back to 1901. 144 of the tickets are signed by 145 no-hit pitchers.

Ironically, I just wrote a letter to Morehead asking him to sign a program to his high school graduation that was a recent eBay purchase.
A multi-sport star, Dave Morehead graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in San Diego, the same alma mater that produced baseball greats HOF Ted Williams and catcher Ray Boone of the famous baseball Boone family (3 generations of BB players). Morehead for many years has now lived in Tustin, CA, literally 5 blocks from the home I grew up in. Strange coincidence! ;)

Even though I am a Yankees fan, I picked up this nice Johnny Pesky coach's jersey. I will even find a spot for it on the wall in my Yankees room...

In order to find all of the no-hitters dating back to 1893 (the year that the mound distance moved to the current 60' 6" standard), which would be impossible, I would still need to find tickets to 81 no-hitters including a few that don't technically match the modern criteria of what defines a true no-hitter (at least 9 complete innings without giving up a hit).

What's realistically the number that I still believe is findable?
I only need tickets to 12 no-hitter games dating to 1935. I'd also would like to upgrade about 3 or 4 of the tickets that are in my collection.
In my mind, I still believe that this may be attainable. With luck, perhaps a few more...
