Basball Gloves in the Original Boxes
1 Attachment(s)
This addition to my 1971 Pirate Collection was a selfish birthday gift to myself. This was the first “real” glove I had as a kid. I got it for Christmas in 1971. I was a military brat and lost it during one of our many moves. It’s funny as a kid I thought it was a thing of beauty. I really don’t remember it being so tacky. This Rawlings 1971 World Series Gold Glove Award Special glove was endorsed by Roberto Clemente and Brooks Robinson. It was sold in stores from 1971-1974.
I had been tempted to buy one but never could find one in nice condition. I think I got extremely lucky when I picked up this one with the complete original box. I can’t imagine it isn’t one of the finest examples of this glove out there. In 2006 Hunt auctions sold one that didn’t have the lid to the box. It is the only other mint condition version of this glove I have ever seen. It was well out of my price range. https://huntauctions.com/live/imagev...=501&lot_qual= I know there are other beautiful more vintage gloves in their original boxes out there in your collections; I would love to see them. Share yours if you have one. |
Ugly glove but sometimes ugly is beautiful. That box on the other hand is fantastic. Amazing collection you have going Mike.
|
So much of that '70s stuff was so gaudy that I see a lot of it now, through the lens of nostalgia, as fun and cool.
|
Very cool! congrats
|
Mike, in all my years of collecting gloves, I have never seen that box before. It's fantastic!

Wow!!
Mike that is an incredible find (if you ever want to sell or trade it - I'm interested). I own the glove and if I recall it is in pretty spectacular condition. I also own a Clemente Sonnett glove in the original box, but don't have access to post a photo currently.

Clemente/B. Robby Glove
Mike,
I was going to bid on the glove/box as well, but spent my money on another item. I really wanted it because of the box, since it pictures Brooks, but glad you came out on top. |
Thanks everyone for the comments. If Howard doesn't already have the box and Jim hasn't seen it before it must be rare. Mark I honestly thought I would be bidding against you for this one.

You likely would have been bidding against me, but I had to sit this one out. Picked up a couple of pricey items lately (at least for me they were) and begrudgingly didn't bid. I've seen this combo a couple of times since I started collecting and it's one that's still on my want list for sure. I think you got a very nice deal on the glove since I know I would have paid more than the final selling price. Would love to see it displayed with the rest of your '71 Pirates collection. Very, very nice pickup. |

I just added this Macgregor 715 Special Hank Aaron glove mint in box. Hank is my second favorite player. I asked for this glove for Christmas 1975. It took 43 years but I finally landed one.
|
Beautiful glove and box of the Hammer!
|
Hi Mike,
You landed a couple of beauties there! I love the Brooks Robinson glove because I remember it. I know that there is a Nolan Ryan red, white & blue model glove that I do not own in my collection, but only because I haven't found one in great condition to date. The Hank Aaron glove is terrific as well. It's amazing that these survived in the condition that they're in with the original boxes. |
Johnny Vander Meer 1939 Goldsmith glove and box

Here is my 1939 Vandy Goldsmith glove (left handed thrower!) and original box.
The glove itself has been well used, but the Vandy box is a survivor. If not for some gal storing her sewing patterns in it, it likely would not have survived as well. In following different auctions through the years, this box is the nicest example that I've seen & I'm happy to have it in my collection. Now if only I could find a left-handed Goldsmith VDM model glove as well as a Draper & Maynard glove in nice shape I would be golden... Anyone out there that might be able to help me find these? I am willing to pay Top Dollar! |

Merry Christmas Mike. Now get out there to the outfield we've been waiting for you for years to get that glove!
After reviewing the autograph/t206 threads, these boxes are bringing a smile to my face. Thought I would post my only box... |
Nice box Peter too bad they still don't package gloves that way.
