Show your tattoos (orbits) !!
When I was 8 years old, I ordered a bunch of reprint cards. It might have been from Sears but I think it was TCMA Ltd. In this group, there were T206's that were perforated in a booklet and had all of the big dogs. There were also the Ruth & Gehrig Goudey reprints and several others.
However, the ones that stuck out the most to me were the Tattoo Orbits. I loved the colors - orange, brown, red - very earthy. I think there was a Connie Mack and Dizzy Dean that really stuck out. In the current spring auctions, I have seen a couple of complete sets. I was surprised to learn that there were only 60 cards and the price is reasonable. I have long said that when I get done with the post-war run 33 Delong (hopefully the Lionel Carter set) would be my first foray into a pre-war set. But I have to say that I am being very tempted by the tattoo beauties as the auction ends. So let's see them!! |
Thought you mean't real tattoos when I opened this thread :D

I completed both the Tattoo Orbit and DeLong sets---sold them both when I got out of the collecting end of the hobby. The listed shortprints of Andrews and Blaeholder really aren't, it's just based on quantities from an early find. Those numbers evened out over the years. I had a really hard time tracking down Bartell and Lombardi but was eventually successful. Levey (Jewish) gets a significant premium from what I remember. Dean, Foxx and Mack are the high dollar cards. Of note, there are no Senators or Yankees in the set plus a couple others. My set was #2 on an early version of the SGC Registry and I also had a signed card in Grimes. Lombardi was my last card for completion. Nice set and very underrated. I'm quoted throughout this article which gives some more info....http://www.sportscollectorsdaily.com...ble-challenge/

Couple from this nice looking set. And yes, seems undervalued compared to the mass quantity of Goudey's.

Not seeing too many raw Tattoo-Orbits in this thread. Here's my one and only, held up a la Jay Miller with his OJs.

Did someone say raw? I like my tattoos red and raw. The Cuyler I posted earlier is actually ungraded (it just has a SGC-like black backdrop). I think I have one graded T. Orbit. Gotta remember to deplasticfy. Deplasticfy is a real word, but please do not attempt to Google it...that is how fresh it is.
