Honolulu Braves (semi-pro?, beer league?, when?) in the dugout
http://photos.imageevent.com/kawika_...%20Dugout2.jpg The Honolulu Braves were a firs-class semi-pro outfit in the late 20's-early 30's. The big guy "manspreading" is Sig Jakucki, one of the aces of the 1944 Browns. At the time this picture was taken he was either a serving US Army soldier or had just been discharged. A local baseball promoter, who I assume owned the Honolulu Braves, bought Jakucki's early release from the Army so he could play with the team. Sig was the team's most popular and talented player at the time, and the local fans all chipped in to buy him a steamship ticket back to the mainland where he was offered an Oakland Oaks tryout. I wrote about Jakucki in my book The League of Outsider Baseball - he was a wild man and one of baseball's most interesting characters!. If you ever want to sell this picture, please let me know, I like these obscure teams and players. |

One of the more interesting than anything else photos I bought. 1905 Archer Electric Literary and Athletic Club. This thing is huge, no way to scan it all in one piece, except going and paying someone with a giant scanner to do it (which it is not worth the price to have done). I just think it is an interesting piece, not that there is anyone special in it (not that I can see anyway, there are a lot of dudes in the "literary" part of this).

I wonder why the home plate umpire is making the call at third base? (Joe D. sliding into third base...Ken Keltner covering). Was that the norm at that time?

to a bunch of kids. He is probably already sickened by his gas exposure in WWI and has such a sad and wistful look it is painful to behold. I was going to make a comment on the Cobb/Mantle photo but managed to restrain myself. |
