Owen Wilson and His Triples - aka the Sloate Trivia thread
1 Attachment(s)
Owen Wilson holds the single season record in 1912 for triples in a season with 36 three baggers.
The next year in 1913 he had only 14 triples, his second highest season total. That same year he attempted 19 stolen bases, but was caught stealing 10 times. In 1915 he was successful on only 8 of 23 attempted stolen bases. So what gives, Was Owen Wilson too fast to stop at second accounting for his triples or, was Owen Wilson too slow to get to home plate settling for a triple instead? Attachment 269871 |
Most of it has to do with him playing at Forbes Field, where he hit 24 triples that year. The difference between 1911 and 1912 is that his doubles and inside-the-park homers (42 total) turned into 24 more triples, two of which were him getting thrown out at home trying for a homer. He went from 34 doubles down to just 19 and eight inside-the-park homers in 1911, down to two in 1912. Just one of those years where the ball bounces different and you build up a certain stat. Wilson only had one more year at Forbes, so his triples production was bound to drop.

The field where he played was certainly a factor. In 1912 do we know how many of his Forbes Field triples resulted in him being thrown out at home trying to stretch.
I suggested that he may have settled for a triple, without expressly suggesting that he may have tried unsuccessfully for the inside the park home run instead.;) |
Do you know who has hit the most triples in a season since 1930 (no peeking, of course)?

I love Curtis. Such a good guy.

Evan Gattis, all 250 or so pounds of him, had 11 triples in 2015.
I loved Owen Wilson in 'Wedding Crashers'. |

Just an ejimakated guess, but I would say Wilson was slow out of the gate, hence the pick offs, but picked up speed with distant accounting for the triples. |

Sometimes weird things happen. The only major offensive category that Carlton Fisk ever led the league in? Yep, triples. With 9 in 1972. He was kind of fast for a catcher, but still, dude was a catcher.

If you hit a walk off HR back in those days with a man on first, didnt they record it as a triple since you didnt need to score the second run to win? Just asking..... also, remembering that great Baseball Scoops card I had as a kid MAYS HITS 3 TRIPLES IN ONE GAME! AWESOME

One of my favorite players too! A buddy of mine always gets front row tickets next to the visiting teams on deck circle when the Mets come to town. |
