High prices lately for 52's. Am I missing something?
Been noticing lately a huge increase in some 52 prices that I haven't seen before.
Some cards are still reasonable, or in the price I am familiar with, but some have me scratching my head lately? This one just sold. (These are nice cards but I haven't seen prices like this before for raw/ungraded) http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-Topps-3...vip=true&rt=nc http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-TOPPS-2...vip=true&rt=nc http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-TOPPS-7...vip=true&rt=nc http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-TOPPS-1...vip=true&rt=nc http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-TOPPS-9...vip=true&rt=nc http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-TOPPS-1...p2047675.l2557 |

FYI. Parnell: $162.28 Wilson: $100.00 Hansen: $46.76 Elliot: $77.00 Hogue: $256.00 Maxwell: $201.50 I put bids in on quite a few of these cards, plus many more. I didn't expect to win them all, obviously, but I would have bet I was going to win at least a couple. Needless to say, I was blown away when I woke up and seen what they sold for! |
Irv, on all but the first card, it was the same two bidders bidding on items from the same seller in what appears to be a bidding war. However, both sellers have 50% or more of their bids with this seller. FWIW, I have won items from this seller at reasonable amounts, so despite the high pct of bids with this seller, IMO it is a bidding war between the two bidders.
The graded 52s I have won in the past month have all been at reasonable/in-line with previous sale prices. This appears to be a one off. |

I guess time will tell soon enough if this was an anomaly or not? |

I did note this increase earlier in another thread about Greg Morris cards and the prices realized, but supposedly GM cards are pretty nice and graded by him pretty accurately. Needless to say, I didn't win any of those ones either! :( |

Surprisingly often, a card will simply get caught up in a competition between two people who really want it. I was recently in on a 1974-75 OPC WHA card in NR-Mint that was worth about $3.00. I was quite interested in obtaining it, though, so put in a $10 snipe. To my great surprise, I lost out and it went for over $13. Other instances of that card have gone for under $3 in the same grade. So, it can just be a random thing. |
The Hogue at $256 was stunning, given all the ink schmack.

Hopefully, as I need all 3 cards, these prices won't remain this lofty. |
Personally I think the aforementioned "tax refund boost" is completely real and has been happening as long as I can remember. I tend to avoid purchases as much as possible this time of year as everything sells for more as people feel flush with cash.
It will drop down by June 1st and Greg Morris does get a premium as said due to trust. |

Also just look at the price point...whether its a 100 dollar card that sells for 200......yeah its a huge increase..but its still 100 bucks...for some people time is worth more to them then 100 bucks...they know they can get the card in a week or so for less but its not worth it to them.
also for some reason people rather pay 200 at auction for a card that sells for 150 regularly versus paying 200 on a BIN.....for some reason the buyer does not want to feel like a sucker and pay the BIN price but will pay the same thing in an auction as its not a personal buy and sell with a specific seller so the buyer does not feel like a sucker...so im told when its over a few hundred bucks , i dont think that creates market price on a lone sale or 2....when you see a rookie ruth go up by 100k, then thats more than just convenience.... |

I have always gotten a nice premium for a decent maxwell. That price does not shock me at all.

I wish I was as smart as other people
