April pickups
4 Attachment(s)
As many of you know, I am an advanced collector of no-hitter related items.
I recently picked up an oddball item related to 1965 Red Sox no-hit pitcher Dave Morehead- an original 1961 Commencement Exercises (Graduation) program from San Diego Herbert Hoover High School. In doing my background research on Morehead I realized that he was an excellent multi-sport scholar athlete at Herbert Hoover HS and was drafted directly out of high school. Because of lack of depth in the Red Sox starting pitching roster, Morehead advanced quickly to the majors and was successful at hurling a no-hitter in 1965. One other famous graduate from Herbert Hoover High was none other than HOF great Ted Williams. The day that I received this program three weeks ago, I wrote a letter to Morehead asking if he would sign this program & inscribe it with his no-hitter date. When I looked up his address I was shocked to find that he now lives in a home less than 3 blocks from the home I grew up in! How weird is that? I received it back in today's mail. :D |
Scott, Great addition to your already impressive collection. Nothing about your collection surprises me any longer.

c. 1880s Ring Style Bat
5 Attachment(s)
This 36" ring bat is the most ornate I have ever had the pleasure of owning and looks even better in person. It was made by L.B. & Co. and is marked "Regulation" in gold lettering. While it just got started, if April ended right now I'd call it a success!

Great bat Jonathan. I love those "grain painted" bats and that one is a beauty.

Here's an uber-rare Football Statue I was fortunate to pick up recently. Truly spectacular in its detail, it is an original 1800s figural version of College Football's Walter Camp Award. The Walter Camp Award is second only to the Heisman, in terms of its lofty status...
http://www.picksixpreviews.com/walter-camp-award.html Amazingly, this intricate 3 Man Statue portion is still in use today (see photo of Ricky Williams holding his Walter Camp Award). This is a completely finished piece, and the earliest known version of the prestigious sculpture. See pics below, with the latter versions being about 125 years older than Williams' Trophy! |
Wow Mark Wow!! Congrats

As for Walter Camp himself... In 1873, he attended a meeting where representatives from Columbia, Rutgers, Princeton, and Yale universities created the intercollegiate football association (IFA). So given the evidence and accompanying items, the timing is likely somewhere in that 1870 - 1880 range... or thereabouts. If anyone has further evidence or insight (especially regarding the Sculptor), please share! A final note... the materials, construction, and style of Base are all virtually identical to the Muller Baseball Statues of 1868. Same elongated oval base with textured surface. So I'm confident there's well over a century of age to it. Thanks! |
Fantastic find Mark! Congrats😃👍🙌

Thanks Michael, Joe, Mike, Scott and Albert. Appreciate the kind words.
Joe- thanks for the additional info. Late 1880s time frame makes lots of sense. Appreciate your rationale and insight :D |

A little pen holder for your desk. Circa 1958 and given away(?) by Sun Valley Dairy of SF. There is also a Cepeda that, from what I've heard, is much harder to find.

Congrats Rob! That Mays figural is one tough piece. Saw one about 8 years ago and was underbidder. Yours is much nicer, and the only one I've seen since then.
Great pickup! |

Koufax program
2 Attachment(s)
I got this in the mail today, compliments of ebay.
It's a scored program from the Dodgers / Pirates game in LA on April 14, 1961, Koufax took the loss in his first appearance of the year (4th game for the Dodgers), giving him a career record of 36-41. Late in the game, Ron Perranoski made his major league debut, striking out the first batter he faced to end the 8th inning. I now have scored programs for 200 Koufax regular season games. 85 wins, 43 losses, 6 saves, 66 no decision games. 197 more to go... Doug PS - I also have his 8 post season appearances. |

Claude Passeau was different Baseball Magazine supplement #900 (both m113 & m114) for me. Mathewson was #901.
Those two spots towards the bottom right corner of each scan mean that I really need to clean my scanner. Doug |

"Babe Comes Home"
Looks like April is off to another great start for the net 54 crew, great items guys. Was lucky enough to acquire this Ruth/Movie crossover item on the B S T board this week. Now have the suitcase in hand because of some extra effort by Marty the "Mighty Quinn", and it looks great for being 90+ years old. Once again another smooth 54 transaction because of great service and communication, much appreciated sir. Looking forward to researching this item, keep the posts coming fellas, always enjoy seeing the newest additions !
