Probstein's Goudey Lajoie
Interesting . . . front is simply breathtaking . . . back is, well, severely problematic.
Putting aside any gripes you might have with the owner, who would drop $20,000 on this card if they won the lottery this weekend? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1933-Goudey-...4AAOSwCU1Y283d |
Let me tell you, it sucks being a Cleveland collector at times. To do team sets, I have to have empty spaces with the '33 Goudey Lajoie, and the CJ Shoeless Joe, at least until I become a millionaire . Beautiful front on that Lajoie.

Simply stunning front
And the derailed. I would still love to own it. Way too iconic of a card. |
|
The front is stunning. I would have no problems owning a card like that. My 55 Bowman looks amazing from the front and is missing a chunk the size of a 50 cent piece from the back.
I do enjoy the 99 bids from maybe 10 different bidders. |
Well, it was bought from Heritage in May 2016 for $23,900.
It just sold via Probstein on ebay for $16,766. Looks like a big loss for the seller. Steve |

Why do you think such a large discount to last price? |

IMHO, Heritage gets high prices for their items, due in large part to their massive worldwide client base. When Heritage sold this Lajoie last year, they had it in their "Signature" sportscard auction, where many more people probably saw it, even those who weren't specifically looking for it. Plus, last year at this time was kind of the beginning of the "errational exuberance" we experienced in card buying. As for ebay, with the exception of PWCC, prices are for the most part, significantly lower. Also, the card didn't really stand out this time; one had to actually be looking for it to know it was there. Also, prices have retreated a bit from the highs of last year. Steve |

Exactly! |
One turned up on Reddit and I initially though it might be it, but I'm sure it's not now. Pasted in a scrapbook. Came our pretty clean.

If I hit the lotto, sure.

Anyone who would list a rare card like that with Probstein and his 20,000+ EBay listings is either
Probstein A dear close friend of Probstein or an idiot. |
i watched this end last night...I actually considered throwing in a bid late as I thought the price was low! I just couldnt get past the back damage.
|
Quick flip and the seller took a bath. To add insult to injury, now they have to pay Ebay 10% for the privilege of losing $5,000.
|
It seems Heritage's image is brighter & it looks like a better card
Maybe this has something to do w/ it. Or the winning bidder of Heritage's card was the consignor & no longer bidding on it w/ Probstein https://dyn1.heritagestatic.com/lf?s...oduct.chain%5D http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/9Z4AAO...3d/s-l1600.jpg |

Never understood the attraction of this card, issued nearly two decades after his playing career. Yeah, I know it's short printed or whatever.
|
I think it's a real cool looking card. Don't see that green very often. But many other Goideys are cool as well. The story and perceived scarcity is the kicker.

I liken it to a 1940 play
Ball joe Jackson... Don't get me wrong if someone gave me a lajoie or a really Good deal on one, I would take it... But it wouldn't be in my top 50 if you gave me 30k to spend on a card |
I think if you're a 33 Goudey collector this is your holy grail. I really love the history and story behind how this card was purposely left out of the set. It holds a special place for me as the first really big baseball card purchase I made back in the early 2000's for a psa 6 for $25k on ebay. About 5 years later I got a call from a mysterious broker (forget his name) who had a buyer willing to pay $35k for it and I decided to sell. Wish I still had that baby today but just looking at VCP it hasn't appreciated as much as I thought it would have since then. Maybe just thinly traded perhaps?
