'59 Goodness
1 Attachment(s)
Bought all these cards raw as part of my completion of the set and submitted to PSA a while back. The Clemente is hard to see, it is a 7.5. The Mantle is undergraded (of course LOL). Let's see your '59s!
|
Dan-- if you have not checked it out there is a very good 1959 baseball thread on CU in the PSA Forum with several 59 enthusiasts involved
|
Thanks Al, will definitely check that out. Very impressive Tony. I need a scanner like yours!
|
Tony, the color and centering on that Berra are amazing!
|
Tony. How did the Banks only get a 6. That looks great ! Thanks for sharing! Scott
|
some of the prettiest 6's I've seen. Anyone else remember when 6's has noticeable corner wear???
|
Very nice cards Tony. Gibson pink ? There are variants of the Wynn card. Nellie in his THINKER pose, Topps finally gets Musial right. Ford in what became a typical pose for them. Great shots of Kaine, Berra ( why did the Cardinals sign Garogiola over Yogi, two local kids),Maris( ultimately a Cardinal although Topps was ambivalent about it ?). Good on of Duke too. And old Bob Clemente. First Topps set I finished and one of my favorites
Hello from Dubai |
Thanks everyone. I've sifted through literally thousands of 59's before settling on examples like these that fit. My set consists of all 6's and 6.5's (nothing lower or higher) and eye appeal is king.
Scott thank you and I agree on the Banks. Would not look out of place in a 7 slab, as many of these wouldn't. Hi Al. Good to hear from you my friend!! Here's more EX-MT beauties. If anyone else has some 59's to share, post away!!! http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw...ppserskine.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw...swittfinal.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw...sferrarese.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw...toppsboyer.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw...toppshouse.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw...pslandrith.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw...oppsobrien.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw...oppsvirgil.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw...toppsgroat.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/threetw...ppsbarclay.jpg |
Love the 59 set! I am building both a raw set & PSA 6 set. Such a beautiful, colorful set.
|
Best pick up I had was the 59 Lumenti "no option" verison I got for $1 and it graded a 6. Score there.
|
My favorite set and the first one I finished.

Guys - The quality of these cards shown cannot be improved upon.
Bravo! Here are a couple of The toughies. RayB |
Hi everyone! Glad to see this 1959 Topps thread here. Great to see Tony, Al, Ray, Dan and others. I kind of like the 1959 Topps as well. :D
|
The scans that you all have put up are amazingly nice!
|
Seeing those 59's make me realize I'm not the only one that got shafted on some of my grading submissions!
|
If one wants to see some perfect 59 cards see Don's CU thread in the PSA Registry Forum.
|
Hi Don, great to see you here!
|
Thanks Al and Dan...
I just received this back from PSA a couple of weeks ago....sent it in for review service....it was a PSA 9 when I sent it in....now, it is..... http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...psg7ckmqnl.jpg |
A lot of Don's 9s and 10s can be found in this thread along with links to his Registry set

The graders at PSA are EXTREMELY tough on grading this set. I have had cards look like 8's come back as 5's.

Like this.
Can one really tell the difference? |
You should have covered the flips Ray and seen how many picked the 8 from the 5

unreal. I used to have a 500 count vending box that was factory fresh and they didn't look that flawless.
|
Don has escaped from photobucket purgatory
|
No room for all the 59' envy that exists regarding your 59's Don.
Absolutely insane. Nice! |
Johnsonville. Located just this side of heaven.......
Stunners!!! |
The other side of heaven has been really hot this summer, Tony :-)
|
Ho hum. A 58 year old card of the HR King, in flawless condition. Yawn.
Hi Don :D |
The 1959 Topps set was the FIRST vintage set I ever completed. I clearly recall picking up the Al Kaline All Star card to finish the set. I am sure I overpaid ($40.00) but the elation of fulfilling a dream seamed far more important. Sadly, this set doesn't get the love and respect it deserves. A VERY beautiful and colorful set!

Keep the hits coming! I love this thread.

1959
1959 was the first set I finished, so I have a soft spot for it and it's accessories, including the many variations and variants

they got me good, too.Bought Legendary Auction set for 8,000.00 ,their last auction before higher ups getting pinstripes in prison.PSA got me good and I received a ton of 5s and 6s.Heartburn!!!!!

Not a great scan, but these are the 3 Sullivan backs---circled copyright and no circle around copyright and period or not after A in USA, the last being the toughest
http://i1267.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0759c411.jpg But there are also two Sullivan front variants. Note brown box in lower left front border area. Given the front and back differences, who knows how many combos are possible. Maybe Bob knows :) http://i1267.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2c95bf31.jpg And the 3 Spahn backs http://i1267.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0b9d638e.jpg |
Thanks Anthony, Al, Ray, Tony, Dan et al....
Al, good stuff you are posting. Yes, screw Photobucket.....outta there. I discovered that one can upload their own scans here using the attachment icon above. |

Al, I think I know what the third card is on this panel even though it has been cut off....who knows why.
