In the late eighty's and early ninety's I was collecting vintage cards with my son Jonathan. From an illness he passed away I stopped collecting and didn't pick up again until I started showing my grandson my cards..... the passion is back. I was going through my old paperwork and I found my old Frank Nagy and Mark Macrae lists of the cards that they were offering for sale. I than came across a list of cards from gentleman who was selling his collection. I bought as much as I could from him at the time without getting divorced.....check out these prices ! This is before eBay when you got lists in the mail.

Cool, Gary - I'm glad you are able to share with your grandson.
Before (my exposure to) EBAY, I bought a lot via Teletrade phone auctions. They suxd in comparison. I still made a bunch of money in September, '98, selling all my McGwire rookies- I just had good timing on that. |
Thanks for sharing those pages. I got into the hobby right at the beginning of ebay so never really got sheets in the mail like that, back in the day. I still get a few auction listings sent in the mail that way though, from very small companies, and I don't know how they make a profit. There are 2-3 companies that send out these copies of auctions on paper, through the mail, a few times a year. I don't know why I get them as I have never bid with their companies. There are definitely some dinosaurs still in the hobby. :)

So Gary, which of those did you buy?

I had to beg my wife back than to spend almost $500.00 dollars on the cards. We had three little ones back than and I was swinging a hammer for a living. I wrote back and forth with this man several time and bought two lots from him. I bought the ones crossed out and than the highlighted ones with one more purchase. I was able to put together a highlander team set with some awesome backs (hindu-$11.50) but later in life sold it to send my son to wrestling camp. I still have most of them, my mello-mint, red cross and this Breisch-Williams that I paid 25.00 for.....
See my faceBook site and post some of your cards to show off !!! https://www.facebook.com/groups/554519474738304/ |
Gary, I am very sorry about your son passing away. I'm glad you shared a passion with him that made you both happy. Also pleased to hear you are beginning to collect again and sharing your passion with your dear grandson. You two have a great time, bro.
Yeah, those prices of the late 80s / early 90s seemed so high to me, and kept getting higher by the month, after the early years I had collected from 72-78. Now----shock. Plus, they have to be graded to be taken seriously. Have a great day, and thanks for sharing with us.:) ---Brian Powell |
