Jan 1928 Baseball Magazine Ad for Walter Mails Baseball Game (WG7)

I found this ad on page 380 in the Jan 1928 issue of Baseball Magazine (E.S. Barnard cover), for the Walter Mails Baseball Game.
The Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards has the issue date as 1923, and I believe its been further identified as a 1924 issue (so listed at Old Cardboard website). The ad suggests it was at least still for sale through beginning of 1928. Looks like Walter Mails may have been trying to unload remaining inventory on holiday shoppers in December 1927, assuming the magazine would have come out before the holidays. I sure wish I found this set in my stocking this past Christmas! |
Cool ad
since it mentions Bob Meusel, here is his card (not mine, taken from eBay) http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/YeoAAO...Uv/s-l1600.jpg http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ZZQAAO...U1/s-l1600.jpg |
That is a neat ad. And if from a 1928 magazine it makes it all the more interesting. Walter Mails cards are fairly scarce. I wonder why they didn't sell?

Awesome ad!
I think Walter "The Great" Mails was trying to get rid of his overstock. It is interesting that the box itself lists Santa Monica, CA (L.A. area) while this ad has an address in El Cerrito, CA (Bay Area). In 1923 & 1924 Mails was playing for Oakland and by 1928 he was with San Francisco, not sure what that means in regards to the address but it seems Mails was a Bay Area native having been born in San Quentin. |
