Attachment 263870Grant has dedicated himself to studying and promoting the history of blacks in baseball. On his official website, Grant pays tribute to the fifteen black pitchers (including himself) who have won 20 games in a season. The "15 Black Aces" are: Vida Blue, Al Downing, Bob Gibson, Dwight Gooden, Grant, Ferguson Jenkins, Sad Sam Jones, Don Newcombe, Mike Norris, David Price, J. R. Richard, C.C. Sabathia, Dave Stewart, Dontrelle Willis, and Earl Wilson. In 2006, Grant released his long-awaited book, The Black Aces, Baseball's Only black Twenty-Game Winners, featuring chapters on each of the black pitchers to have at least one twenty win season, and also featuring Negro League players that Mudcat felt would have been 20 game winners if they were allowed to play. The book was featured in the Hall of Fame during Induction Weekend 2006, and in February 2007 President Bush honored Mudcat and fellow Aces, Ferguson Jenkins, Dontrelle Willis and Mike Norris, and the publication of the book at a ceremony at the White House "From Wikipedia "

Received this card in the mail today. Apparently it's not considered a rookie card by most but it was issued the same season as his Topps rookie card.
http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/...syxs7z5fk.jpeg Also awaiting the arrival of my first Dan Dee card which has lots of good honest wear. I am on a bit of regional/non-mainstream issue kick lately. http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/...shdnf7gtf.jpeg |

Nice pick ups guys. Dustin that Irvin looks great!
I picked up this one last night from one of my favorite Topps sub-sets from the 1961 issue. RayB |
Dustin, I like your regional / food issue pick-ups. These kind of cards, discs, coins, premiums make for a marvelous type card collection. Each is a nifty conversation piece, which is really is a theme I bring out in my lengthy E-book on a CD about the subject, NEVER CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN.
A problem today is that collecting one or two complete sets of these kind of cards can consume an enormous amount of time and money, depending on the grade of item you must have, and if you go all the way and have the items professionally-graded by PSA / SGC. Thus doing makes your collection infinitely more marketable when the time comes to sell, or sad to say, if we succumb before we though we would. Thanks for sharing your joy, bro!:D ---Brian Powell |
Very grateful for some deals on these cards today at a local card show at our mall.
The '58 Mantle is pretty clean with some light fading but the deal was too good to pass on. Both the '68 Mantle and Koufax are clean. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...729bc178de.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Nice cards Jon, well done!

Dustin, That Monte Irvin Dandee is a way cool looking card. Like the Winfield disk as well. I have one in my collection somewhere but certainly not in the Gem Mint condition. Congrats.

Been looking for a Rosen for a while now but not having much luck winning anything in the 3-5 range. What were the other 4 you picked up? |
Quote:
The Rosen card is tough at PSA 6 and above, thus a five for me. There were a few 6s that ended recently, but not many 5s. How far along are you on your set now? |
With this my Topps run is now complete...now just need the 51B for the complete basic run!!

On eBay, I went "head to head" with another lunatic, and came out on top(?) with a $2.33 bid 1962 Action Baseball Game card Roger Maris.

Yesterday I'm at our local baseball card show here in Jacksonville. I'm looking at a table of cards when this other collector comes over and hands a binder to the dealer and asks if he is buying cards. Well I pretend to look at the dealers cards, but what I'm actually looking at is the binder this guy hands to the dealer LOL! Mostly mid 70s baseball cards but I do see some 1966 Topps "rub-offs" which I collect. So the dealer tells this guy he is not interested, and the guy takes his binder and moves on. So do I, right over to the guy and asks him what are you selling?
We plop down on a couple of chairs, and I buy all the '66 rub-offs on my wantlist I paid him $3 each for Mays Koufax Robinson and Banks, and $1 each for the others. I've been trying for this set for awhile so I'm glad to get the hits. http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/Scan_43.jpeg He keeps trying to sell ma a stack of low grade 1965 Topps Transfers but I tell him I'm not collecting that set. He really wants me to buy them, and bundles the Topps Transfers with a 1975 Phillies Roster on this brochure and says eight bucks. So I guess I'm collecting the '65 Topps Transfers now with Aaron Gibson and two Koufax included. http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/Scan_44.jpeg |

I am over 200-220 only with 58 Hi#'s. I haven't purchased a Hi# yet, only low(er) numbers so far. I am in the process of moving my Beehive hockey cards to free up some money, so hopefully I can give it a good bunt this spring/summer? (My latest additions are at the top in my FlickR link below) |
Ray,
Congrats on the beautiful Kubek. |

After some wheeling (thanks Jake) and dealing (thanks Kurt) I was able to pick up this very nice (for me at least) example of one of my dream cards. Very, very happy with it.

I got this in the mail a couple of days ago. I have been trying to find it for months, its card #416 from the Japanese 1974 Calbee set.
It is the most captivating photo I have ever seen on a baseball card. The guy crouching in the on-deck circle (#3) is Shigeo Nagashima, the most popular player in Japanese baseball history. The guy taking a swing at the plate is Sadaharu Oh of 868 career home run fame. They were a long time 3-4 combination in the Giants lineup in the 1960s to early 70s. This photo was taken during the last game of Nagashima's career. So this photo captures on of the last moments of them on the playing field together. The photo is kind of perfect - the balance between the blue sky and the packed stands, with the colorful advertising billboards in between, is flawless. Also you have both player's backs to the camera, which (intentional or not) adds to the sense of finality about it, like they are getting ready to walk off into the sunset or something (at least for Nagashima, Oh played several more seasons after this). |

Was intrigued by this Hank Aaron "real photo postcard" in that I'd never seen this picture before and the uniform number was from the 1954 season. Would love to know more about it, but I suspect it's something of a one-off.

A recent P/U from a seller who gave me this card!
When I first seen it, I thought that is a sweet looking card. I told myself I'd keep an eye on it but got busy and forgot about it. Been dealing with this seller (Texasholdem) for a while now. He usually has unique/different stuff and his shipping fees are great. Thanks again, Tex! :) |
Saved up my pennies for these two

Thanks Jason. It's been a while since I picked up something like the Aaron rookie. I have been talking to this guy for a while about this card. I was able to bundle a bunch of other cards to make it work. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Sean - that Calbee is a thing of beauty!!
and Jason - I thought that Hank Aaron PC was pretty cool too as it's an image I hadn't seen before. The Kodak postcard back and the writing on the back are pretty consistent with the Jim Rowe postcards produced in the 1960's-70's (utilizing photos by George Brace and George Burke). Here's a thread with more info: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=118709 |
Wow, thanks for finding that Rowe/Brace thread!! Yes, fits the bill exactly. Mystery solved!

Wait, you think a 13 year old would be excited seeing two performers in their mid-70's on stage????? ;)

I go to a local card shop to buy some card savers and walk out with a 1975 Topps rack pack. I couldn't resist as the top 3 cards were absolutely mint! These 3 beauties are going to PSA in the next couple of days. I believe both the Brock and Washington have Gem Mint potential. By the way, if someone tells you that the centering in this set is all over the place, they aren't lying!!!

A few more for my 52 Topps collection.
The Goodman is a PSA 5, the rest are ungraded. Happiest of all obtaining the Sisler this go around as I always seemed to get out bid on this card. :) |
I can't believe I found this card!!!
