All I can say is that the reason I tried my hand at promoting a show was because of various issues I had with promoters with whom I was working, as a dealer. I can honestly say that Joe was pretty much the example I was shooting for in terms of responsiveness, honesty, and actually promoting a show instead of trusting that inertia would keep it running. I couldn't be more excited to be doing yet another Joe Drelich show!

Hello Joe,
I was excited to hear of this transition when I first heard rumor of it last month. One of the big things that has irritated many dealers/collectors about the show has been the rule below taken directly from the dealer rules posted on the phillyshow website. Could you provide your feedback and advise if you will be rescinding this rule or keeping it in force? 26. Any dealer who wishes to exhibit at the Philly Show may not exhibit at competing sports show with (50) miles of the Valley Forge venue within (60) days of a Philly Show date. (NOTE: Per dealer inquiries, this policy applies to major sports convention shows only. Small ‘mall’ shows and dealer ‘shop’ appearance shows are not applicable). Thanks DJ |
I drove down to the last show and really liked it. Probably because buying cards, playing card games at a casino, and drinking a few Coronas pretty much covers my current vices. One stop shopping.
Seriously, I was really happy with the amount of vintage stuff. Probably better than the most recent White Plains shows I've gone to. |
i'm
there:)
|
I will let Joe answer that (hi Joe) but I addressed that with him yesterday on the phone. I was happy with the response (and unhappy with that rule).

Joe, the show is trending now that you're involved. Looking forward to returning to the show at some point this year.
|
Congratulations Joe! Looking forward to seeing you at the show.
Any chance you can bring Jayson Werth in to sign at one of the future shows? |
I'm coming back
I'll be back in March thanks to Joe's involvement. I've known Joe for god knows how long now and have complete confidence that he will try his hardest to run a successful show, and that is all we can hope for from a promoter. Looking forward to many future shows as well.

Good Luck with the show - setup long time ago, maybe 10 years now sense the last time, but will maybe look into it again if I can. At least a visit would be fun and do some buying and selling
Thanks for info Jimmy |
Hey Joe, thanks for the quick response. I think this will be a step in the right direction. I hope I can make it to the March show and you are able to revive the show back to where it was a few years ago.

Thank You Joe!
I'm setting up a meetup on Friday night at the show with my secret facebook group called Tobacco Row. I pointed them to this thread for the free admission. Thank you very much for doing that! Good Luck and Thank You again for keeping this show going and improving it over time! |
Philly Show
Hi Joe:
I am not a dealer and have never set up at a show. As a long time card and memorabilia collector all I would request is to NOT make the show into an autograph show. Did you head up a show in Oaks PA. a few years back? If so it seemed to me that autographs were the focus and not the dealers. Perhaps it was because they could not/would not attend due to the language in the Hunt contract that you have already said would be deleted. I have never attended shows in Chantilly, which again I think you run, but in asking collectors about it they all say it is more of an autograph show. I know there are a lot of autograph collectors out there, and Dave Hunt and most other shows have autograph guests. I am sure it is a primary profit maker and I assume it brings people in the doors, but I was at another Oaks show where there seemed to be more than 40 or so autograph guests where most were sitting around waiting for someone to approach their tables. Everyone was there from 1960 Philadelphia Eagles to Shirley from Laverne and Shirley, to wrestlers, boxers, other "old TV and "B" movie stars etc. There were a lot more autograph tables than dealer tables. I would hate the Philly show with it's historic predecessors ( Ft. Washington, and Willow Grove ) turn into "just another autograph show" Fred |
Wish you could get BBCE back at the show. The vintage wax at the show now is very small.
|
Hello Fred, No, I was not involved in any way with the Oakes shows that were run in the past. They were run by Marco ( The original owner of CSA) and Fanatics. I think the show you are referring to was the Fanatics show. With regards to autograph guests, no, the intention is not at all to turn it into an autograph show. My intent is to have the autograph aspect compliment the vintage card show. I have been buying and selling vintage cards autographs and memorabilia as a full time business since 1996 so that is my primary focus. I have been doing minor research on the show back to the Willow Grove and Ft. Washington days from an autograph perspective. What I noticed is Bob use to have free autograph guests on each day of the show While I'm not certain with the costs of athletes today I can replicate that exactly. My intention is to try to bring out 1-2 free guests per show. So for the March show Philadelphia legend Bobby Shantz who is now 91 years old and golfing several times per week, will be signing FREE autographs 1 per paid admission on Friday. So if you would like a FREE auto. simply ask for a voucher when you pay your admission to the show on Friday. All of the shows autograph guests are up to date and posted on the website, the theme for this show was Philadelphia Eagles Past and Present. The September shows main focus will be on 10-15 guests primarily baseball with 1-2 FREE guests. I will have more announcements in the near future regarding the show. With regards to the request for BBCE and Steve Hart. I have reached out to Steve and am currently waiting to hear back from him regarding BBCE setting up at the show. www.phillyshow.com |

I don't mind the autograph crowd at Chantilly. Anything that helps pay the bills and make the show successful I'm all for. What I DON'T like is the incessant calls for people to head to the autograph area. It drowns out all collector/dealer conversations all. day. long.
Isn't there a quieter way to get autograph seekers to their designated area without disrupting the entire card show? jeff |
Great to hear, I have been attending since 1988 back before I was old enough to have a license and my Dad would drive me the couple hours each way to attend. Nothing better than a rainy weekend at the George Washington motor lodge, leaky roof and all. Great memories of the show and I still try to make at least 1 a year

I have attended this show since I was 8 years old with my father at the George Washington Motor Lodge. At that time, we would look forward to March and September to see what old stuff dealers were going to bring. In recent years, it seems that the show has transitioned to slightly newer material and the dealers with vintage stuff stayed away and stopped doing it. I hope with your involvement this will change. Best of Luck, and haven't missed a show in 36 years! Bob Hamlin |

Thanks for clearing up my confusion on your ownership/running of the Oaks shows. Glad to hear you were not in charge of them. Hope your stewardship returns the show to it's glory days, though with the advent of the internet it seems nothing will ever be like it was again. Good Luck with the show. I'll be there early Friday. Best, Fred |

Exciting news. This is the only show I ever go to and usually make two of the three shows per year. In comparison to when I first started attending years ago, this is a much needed revival.

I have known Joe for more years than either of us would probably care to remember as he was a fledging dealer in New Jersey during the late 1980's when I was still living up there.
I'm so excited that Joe is going to be running more large shows around the country and that because of his background, he understands dealer's needs for a show. And that's great news about the no-competing show policy being removed from the contracts. Such a bad rule. Bad Rule. Regards Rich |
When I lived in Philly, I looked forward to this show every time. Glad to see it continuing, apparently in good hands!
|
My husband and I have been coming to the show since 2008, which I think it was in Reading then. The show was great the one time we went when it was in Reading. The first few years it was at Valley Forge were good but it has been slowly going downhill in my opinion(since it became the casino). The last 2 shows were better as there were a few new modern dealers there with good deals but I think there is still WAAAAY too much vintage there, over half the dealers there I have no interest in. I don't care about the autograph guests very much as I am not a Philly fan. But the last few shows if you don't get there first thing Friday all the good deals get bought up by other dealers or early birds. Will be there again on the 3rd and looking forward to some new dealers, hopefully modern with more football and hockey and less baseball prospect stuff. Luckily its a short drive for us but if it starts to become even more vintage heavy or autograph guest heavy, might skip it all together. I know someone mentioned the Oaks Fanatics show, and we really loved that show the 2 times they had it, but it appears they are no longer doing it outside of Chicago. Also been to Chantilly several times but haven't been there in a while due to it becoming more vintage heavy but was planning on checking out the next show since its been about 2 years since we last went. Just my opinions on it and most collectors I know feel the same way but again I know there are a lot of vintage collectors too.

I used to go to this show when it was George Washington Motor Lodge, I was around 8; By time I was 10-11 (my buddy was 4 yrs older) my father used to drop us off around 9 am and pick up at 7 or 8 after the live auction {which I always thought was really cool as a small kid to watch} I used to go with my notebook {list} and $20-$30, which was lot in 1976. My 2 fondest memories happened at that show #1, I found a Mike Schmidt rookie card in someone's quarter box, I couldn't pay him fast enough {it might have booked, if your old enough to remember that term you know what i am talking about for $5 at the time. My 2nd memory was I bought my first vintage card, a real sharp 1959 Clemente for $5; I think he wanted $10, I know it was more than I had, I said this is my last $5, which it was and he sold to me.; keep in mind this is around 1976-77-78. {I remember Mr. Mint vividly on a side note, mostly from Fort Washington though } I used to spend all day with my friend who collected to and was a few years older than I. When it moved to Willow Grove; or they may been at Fort Washington, I was older, cards were becoming popular and I set up for the first time. I was probably around 15-16, maybe 17, my buddy set up too; I'll never forget I had no prices listed on my cards and people would ask me all day Sat; How much? That Sat Night I took everything home {if I recall there were no more Sat night auctions} and wrote prices on the hard card cases; by Sunday afternoon, after I sold a few {less than 10} I packed up, {I just discovered PSA and picked up a SMR and saw their prices compared to book price; it may have been beckett by then, originally it was a paper CCP or something like that. I may still still one lying around I have to check} I didn't want to sell any more of my cards, until I checked them for grading. I would also buy there though. A few years went by, and then I had no ill feelings about selling and buying, it was a marketplace now, and I probably needed the money.
When it went to valley forge I set up for the first few but the show really took a nose dive in my opinion. It became an auto fest. I remember Bob Schmier never had more than 1 or 2 great guests, but it wasn't about the auto's then. {perhaps, things have changed}. I mean when I was a kid we {kids} used to sit on the curb and trade and buy/sell. I think it was late Fort Washington when they said you could only sell to dealers and if you were caught selling outside you wouldn't be allowed back in. I remember I really frowned on that concept. Back then dealers buy prices were not very strong. Any way, I don't know if we ever met; but I hope you bring the show back to what it was. I too, have not missed a show if I did it's only a handful, and that includes Ocean City. It was good, even at Willow Grove, it has been bad at Valley Forge for years. No traffic, except at auto lines, from what I see, which is not good for anyone. So what is the point of all this; to reminiscence, partly, but most importantly, bring back the live auction. A) for the dealers it keeps the customers around until the end of the show; B) for the customers it is a great experience and it gives you a reason to stay. And if your a collector and your at a show your buying and it's a win-win. If I remember Schmier used to ask the dealers if they any lots for the auction. It seems people like to trade ~ online at least ~ so why not set up a section where they can do that. I may set up in Sept, I guess, let's see how it is next weekend. I am 20 minutes away FWIW. I am looking forward to it (but now mostly to drop off stuff at PSA and catch up with some dealer friends). Now I bring my 10 & 11 yr old, and tell them to look through the dime boxes. And they love it. This thread brought back a lot of great memories. Thanks All. |
Since Phillyteamhater is spouting an opinion, she needs to have her name posted as per forum rules
And, that is an interesting dichotomy about crowds with autograph guests and more vintage dealer based show. Yes, with a lot of autograph guests you will draw more people but then the vintage collectors may well then stay home. And if you want the dealers to do well, most of them will tell you they prefer a nice crowd with 1-2 auto guests at most shows but not an onslaught. The National is a bit of an exception since the Autograph Pavilion is totally removed from the dealer tables. Regards Rich |
all vintage here
don't look for me to be adding any modern. well i have some 1970's cards.

Just my two cents, Chantilly was a veritable autograph factory, and, as a vintage dealer the best show I've done. I don't think the two ideas are incompatible. |
How does this show compare in size to the White Plains show? Different dealers at the two shows, I'm assuming?
|
We are pleased to announce that REA will be setting up at the Valley Forge show in booth 911 for the first time ever. We have been very impressed with Joe's efforts in Chantilly, where we've done the last three shows, and we're confident that he has some great ideas to return Valley Forge to its place as one of the hobby's strongest shows.
We will be displaying some incredible highlights from the upcoming April auction (our largest ever) and will be accepting late addition consignments for April as well as catalog consignments for October. Please stop by to say hello, view our highlights, or consign an item. Brian |

Bringing in B and C list actors brings in another type of collector. Personally, I like this new trend as long as there is a baseball tie-in. Drier Brown will be at Chantilly again, and he is a great guy (no, I am not his agent). I am surprised that more female soccer players are not at Chantilly. Chastain, Hamm, Solo and Wambach crushed when they were scheduled to sign. Those type of players bring in a different crowd. I think one of the things that angers dealers is when the spillover from the autograph crowd blocks potential customers from reaching their table. I understand that concern. The fear of the autograph collector is missing out on the guest, which is why most collectors congregate in the autograph area. Most venues have poor PA systems. A problem with autograph tickets is the tiered pricing (flat, oversize, equipment, art etc.). Each tier starts at 1. So initially, when tickets 1-25 are called the number of collectors wanting to be let in is 25 times the amount of tiers. (granted some collectors could have multiples of a given tier but you get the drift). Easy fix, start the first tier of tickets at 1, the second tier at 200, third tier at 300 and so on and so on. The fear of missing out on a guest is magnified due to poor PA systems. Chantilly does a great job of letting the collector know where each signer is at number wise. I walk the show floor until my tickets numbers are called. Other promoters and venues have poor PA systems and signage that there is no way the collector is going to chance straying too far from the autograph area. Saying that the PA drowns out conversation on the show floor is just north of ridiculous. |
I have written about this in the past but at one Albany show with Mickey Mantle, I actually asked the promoter to put me as near the auto line as possible.
Why? Well I was basically setting up at the show for Baseball hobby news and did not bring many cards with me so the purpose was to talk to collectors and schmooze them while they were waiting in line. A couple of dealers got all upset at the auto line (and I suspect at me for where I was -- although I had no real cards at that show) and demanded Ed Keetz move the auto line away from the show floor as that was interfering with dealer sales. You know. those smug dealers did even less business the rest of the weekend (as did I) and why? Well instead of using being near the auto line an opportunity to talk to people, instead they wanted to deal with the few "real collectors' who attended. Yes I know this was 30 years ago but the lesson remains the same. If people are coming for a reason. find a way to talk to them instead of limiting your audience to a few people. regards Rich |
