Vintage Card Collecting

Just rekindled my passion card collecting after a 10yr absence due to throat cancer and the many side effect illnesses that follow. After discovering my cards again I soon realized how much the hobby has changed. The importance of having your cards graded ? The creation of a new released rare card ? The obsession for grade and value.

None of my cards are graded and most are in the good - excellent range. I love reaserching and looking up the history of the player, the card series, and the maker. I don't mind a stain, a crease, corner wear and a lot of my cards have been pasted in albums. I have a Red Cross back like that and love it.

One of the first things I did was to contact a Gentleman that I used to do business with, Mr. Mark Macrea who to my joy was still in business. I love the security and pleasure that comes from dealing with others in much more positive way than the world of Ebay and the other internet avenues.

I collect and have a Highlander/Yankee type collection and love to talk about them...

Welcome Gary. Good to have you on board.
Mark is one of the best and has helped me several times. We have done a fair amount of selling between us and it is always a pleasure. Unlike many other forums, many members here have known each other for decades. That being said, without a newer generation there will be no one to collect after us (I am 55 going on 39 again)..You are amongst friends, Gary. See ya' around here.
..Happy collecting!!

ps...the other thread was locked as it is the same subject.

Gary -

welcome back to vintage card collecting! You'll find that many of us on here aren't big sticklers for condition. I'm usually just happy to find a single example of a card I need/want. But yes, your observations about the changes over the past 10 years are, in general, spot on.

All the best,
Derek

Hey Gary - Even though I don't know you OR many people on this board and have NEVER been to a show outside of the BUFFALO, NY area - I FEEL like I have know these folks for decades...

A common enjoyment (sickness?) of this hobby will do that!

ENJOY!

Welcome Gary ! Glad you survived that struggle and are here to share your knowledge and collection!

The only people obsessed about grading and condition are those obsessed about grading and condition.

Macrae was a good source for your cards-- well known and respected.

Welcome back to collecting Gary. Just because other people are obsessed with plastic cases and sharp corners doesn't mean that you have to be. Lots of my cards can only aspire to being in good condition, but I'm happy with them all the same.

Welcome Back

Welcome back from a Cardinals collector who has multiple vintage cards and very few graded. As a collector I always preferred quantity over quality. As a result I have most of the vintage mainstream Cardinals but very few are of auction quality.

Welcome Gary.

Now, let's see some scans of that Red Cross!!

Snapolit1 02-01-2017 02:35 PM

Welcome back. The hobby has no doubt gotten more complicated in recent years but I have no doubt that you can find kindred spirits no matter your view point and interests. And then just comfortably ignore the others. Enjoy.

Welcome back Gary! I'm glad you are feeling better.

I collect E121-80 and E121-120 Yankees and Giants. Anything associated with the 1921 World Series. My Great Great uncle played Center field for the Yankees and was the lead off batter. He is also the first Yankee to ever get a hit in a world series and score a run in a world Series. Have vintage photos of him and cards from 1921 through 1923. Welcome back to collecting.

Love those 2 cards. Now you need an E121 to go with them. :-)

Glad to have you back in the hobby Gary!! My collection is predominately Yankees, from 1904 thru current. Very few graded, most raw in plastic sheets in albums. My collection is all over the place condition-wise, from cards that would grade authentic to mint, but mostly G+ to Ex+ on the vintage stuff.

Best team to collect, most superstars and interesting players of any team. Enjoy your collecting!!!!!!!
