Info Needed On Brooks Robinson Poster

Does anyone know how this poster was issued? It's quite large at 2'x3'. It appears to be made around 1971 the same time as the Rockwell painting. Was wondering if it was used in sporting goods stores or available to the general public. I've always liked the painting was but was never satisfied with buying the ad pieces or the modern posters. Happy to get it and will be getting up on the wall once framed.

Not sure Clint, but guessing it was available to the general public. Prints of all of Rockwell's illustrations were widely printed and published and available in all sizes. Why do you think this print is vintage to 1971? Nice piece. I'm a huge Rockwell fan and have a couple prints in my office.
|
Thanks Joe. It has a vintage look and feel. It's also been mounted on cardboard which appears to be several years old. It very well could be after 71 but it wasn't something recently made. It also has copyright ATO 1971 in the lower left corner. ATO commissioned the painting in 1971. That's why I started with 1971. Other than that just an educated guess. Rockwell might not of had the rights to this painting like his others.

That makes sense. Certainly seems like an older print - it's nice.
These are two large prints I got framed about 25 years ago. My wife gave them to me as a gift when we were dating and visited the Rockwell Museum in Philly. We've been married 24 years so I know I've had them at least that long. Attachment 259064 Attachment 259065 |
Those look real nice Joe! I'd kill to own an original Rockwell of anything. I'll just have to settle for the poor man's version.

Was available as a poster, calendar and other items through the Curtis co which ran the Rockwell museum in philly for a long time.

Thanks Jim, good info!

Brooks Robinson
Clint,
Thought I'd chime in since I really like pretty much all items Brooksie related. In my experience the older prints have smaller borders, but like stated previously these were made in all different sizes. I have a few different sizes myself as well as the print giveaway for "Thanks Brooks Day" which is a smaller version. I think an original Rockwell would be out of most individuals price range unless you have several million to spend. I settled for a decent copy. :D |
I really appreciate everyone's input. I was really curious about knowing the story behind it. I've read what was online but knew you guys could add a little more. I know it's not a high end item by any means but just love the colors and of course the subject. Thanks again everyone for your input!

I believe it's part of the forum requirement to post a picture of the piece after you have it nicely displayed.
While we're waiting patiently for you to post I'll supply the temperature in Florida with this fairly accurate thermometer. |
Love Rockwell paintings. A poignant and moving perspective on life in the good ol' USA.
|
Mark I will do once it's finished.
|
Anyone notice Brooks signing left handed? The only thing he did right handed was play baseball.....

That's a great little tidbit; thanks for mentioning that in regard to the Rockwell painting. I'm sure most people wouldn't catch that. |
Also, that is Rockwell in the painting with the cigar.

Per Marks request here is the final product. My framer and fellow collector also noticed another thing about the print. The kids Rawlings patch on his glove was made upside down so it could be read right side up.

finished product looks fantastic!
Congrats! Bill |
Thanks Bill!

As an aside, the cap in that print (cartoon bird logo on black crown with orange bill) is my favorite Orioles cap design. Was happy to see the team resurrect the same basic design for their current road uniform.

Gee, Thanks Brooks
Clint,
The print looks great! I have a couple of O's items with an orange border matt and think it's a nice choice. Thanks so much for sharing the finished work. |
Thanks Mark I appreciate it!

Nice frame job, will look awesome on the wall.
Mine is destined to look about the same once I am done with it. Have had the mat for over a year, finally found a Brooks signed poster this past fall. Just fixed up my framing workspace that was torn apart due to water leak in the basement. So, I can finally get it started. Using the same mat I used here; http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p...Jr_photoop.jpg |
Almost all of the Rockwell sports prints are still available from the Rockwell Museum store on their website. I really like all of them.

Looks amazing. Great job seriously!
