T206 Insider Price Check Update

Hi all,

For those of you who use T206 Insider Price Check, I want to let you know that I have added a "dampener" to the algorithm for premium (e.g. Hall of Fame) subjects with difficult backs. The price estimates for those combos are now more in line with the current market.

Thanks.

Thanks Scott, however, when I enter some of my cards and hit enter, it often comes up with a value of $0. Does this mean it has no value, or that it is so rare that it's tough to value, or something else (like maybe I am an idiot....!) For example, type in Cobb red portrait Piedmont 350-460, 42, in a 7 (I have BVG not SGC or PSA in this card) and it shows no estimate; it can't just be the BVG bc I have several SGC and PSA that do not register as well.

Also, upon what sources is the algorithm relying when it spits out a value?

Hi.

1. Price Check does not support BVG since BVG accounts for maybe 1% of T206 graded cards. If you have BVG graded T206 cards, I would recommend that you put "SGC" as the grader when using the site. It's probably the closest, although SGC cards are probably worth more.

2. In terms of my algorithm, I conduct sales surveys which cumulatively have collected over 116,000 price points between 2003 and 2017. I have studied the the market on a daily basis during that period. I have written what many regard as the seminal work on T206. PSA consults me on price (although they don't always agree). I have a six-figure+ T206 collection that I have accumulated over the last 15 years. And I am offering my Price Check service for free.

Okay let me come down from my high horse and try and field your question. My algorithm is essentially based on Subject/Back/Grading Company/Grade. Those are the pricing factors collectors actually consider when buying/selling T206. However, collectors don't pay a full multiple for premium subjects with premium backs e.g. Cobb (Bat Off) with Uzit is not just priced at Cobb (Bat Off) X Uzit. So you have to smooth the algorithm.

. . . and congrats if you own an BVG 7 Cobb Red P42. Nice card for sure.

EDITED TO ADD: I think "spits out a value" riled me. But whatever.

I sent an email bc didn't want to monopolize thread.

Didn't mean to offend (bad use of words). And, I am aware of some of, and sincerely appreciate, the research and literature you have published. From what I have seen, you are a total t206 stud (I mean that sincerely) and a major asset - that is why I am trying to figure this out.

No worries. Email sent. Happy to start a dialogue.

Hey Scot,

Nothing new to add to the thread. Just wanted to thank you for all of the time and effort that you've put into the T206 set. Honestly, as someone who has reached 500+ on the monster several times (and every time I sell off a collection, I swear that I'll never start again! :D), I owe you a huge debt of gratitude in terms of determining scarcity when bidding/purchasing cards for my collection.
You are one of the good guys in this hobby!

Best,

Steve

I presume that you go way beyond the numbers and also based on subjective study. For example, often a card's value track record recently, even just one or two sales, might suggest it is currently worth, say, 2400. Then someone gets it for 1300. But you may stick with 2400 because: Lucky buy that one night? Drop in price going forward? In any case, you have to make these decisions daily?

It's always funny because often I will get what I consider a great bargain, then realize that VCP will now post that "bargain" price and so, essentially, the current value of the card will then be viewed at that point by most others....

Greg- If a card has a pretty solid history at a certain price level, I doubt the card will all of a sudden be viewed solely at that "bargain" price. It will just be added to the recent sales history and averaged in. I think people understand some things fall through the cracks, and bargains are had.

Scot- great work, your price check feature is very helpful.
