This is a 1946 wood, newel-posted sign, purchased from the great Yankee Stadium sell-off of October-November, 1973. It is part of the same Stadium collection that included the earlier-listed 1923 ticket kiosk, 1930s equipment trunk, seats, porcelain-enamel signs, etc. This sign is an unusual and beautiful piece that dates from the opening of the Stadium Club in the spring of 1946.

The sign is large, measuring 50.5” at its widest point and 51.5” from top to bottom (with the bottom section re-attached). The logo is painted onto the wood. The logo itself is one of the earliest possible representations of what became the normative Bat-in-Hat design. The logo was formally introduced by Yankees’ President Larry MacPhail in 1946.

There is some damage. The flourish for the top portion has broken off and the pieces have yet to be located. The semi-circular bottom portion has broken off, but the piece needs only to be attached with new dowels and glue. There have been no attempts to repair or restore the sign.

I’ve attached an AP photo of the Stadium Club from July 23rd 1946. You can see the sign or a very similar one on the wall behind the bar.
