Sometimes you want to DO something about these scammers!

Unbelievable. I sat and watched people bid on this thing a a few others like it last night and just shook my head. Is there anything we can/should do as collectors to stop this??
There are at least a dozen of these same "autographed" cards on ebay right now and all of them honestly claim reprint status except this particular one. Guy has a total ebay transaction of 4 and he just screwed someone hard. I almost sent him a message telling him what a lowlife lying scumbag he is but I stopped thinking he could report me for messaging him and I would get in trouble rather than him. It just burns me up.....but I know the bidder is to blame...or is he? The thing DOES claim to be real.
Forgive my rant. I just keep picturing some young collector getting taken to the cleaners by dudes like this.

I report dozens of sales each week, not that it seems to do any good, but it beats just whining about it.

Beastmode 11-26-2016 06:48 PM

I don't know who is dumber, the seller or the buyer of this crap.

I will gladly do the same. I wasn't aware you could report other people's deals.

The buyer and it isn't even close.:) Whenever I see these type of listings I always think of The Refreshments song Banditos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uz6ZaeqfMkI

I also used to report these listing all the time. After nothing ever being done I quit reporting them.

I have reported quite a few too, namely Battlefield, but nary a reply!

I just hope one day we hear of a big arrest or an investigation happening that shuts all these crooks down for good.

Crikey, he couldn't even spell "authenticity" right!

Lol no and I imagine the authenticity is like a local eye-sore used car lot with "certified" pre owned cars...that they certify themselves :)

I was just about to write the same thing! Caveat emptor...

Ebay used to have an EMR Team, Enhanced Member Reporting.
I was on the team as were other members of Net54.
We worked hard simply to keep the autograph hobby a little cleaner.
John Gonzalez was our ebay contact and John also worked very hard to keep ebay clean.
Unfortunately ebay decided one day to disband the team and John eventually was forced to leave ebay.
The reason was obvious. Our work was costing ebay money in the short run by removing a large number of auctions. Their shortsightedness was so stupid. In the long run if the autograph hobby is hurt by the scum who knowingly sell fakes then ebay too will be hurt. But in their shortsighted thinking, quarterly profits mean more than long term profits, they have damaged the hobby severely.
The crooks are laughing all the way to the bank.

+1

Ebay is an enabler. Period.

Look at the thousands upon thousands of GFA (Stephen Rocchi) certed forgeries that have sold on Ebay during the past five years.

Man someone who bids on that thing missed a lot of warning signs.

It's a good question, whether it's in ebay's long term interest to stop this nonsense. If the supply of suckers is large enough, then even in the long run maybe they'll make more money off of the scammers than they would from legitimate sales (which, I assume, get pushed, to some extent at least, to other platforms).

Definitely don't send scammers harassing messages. But you could send them helpful ones: "Hi, I'm interested in Babe Ruth autographs and noticed your listing. It would be a nice piece, but I'm afraid that somebody ripped you off, as I'm pretty sure that the one that you're selling isn't original. In an abundance of caution, I'll pass word along to eBay. They're probably best equipped to ensure that it's authentic." Something like that.

Hey! At least he spelled "Babe Ruth" correctly

OP I didn't mean to imply that you were doing nothing but whining sorry. But we do see a lot of pointless complaining around here as opposed to people making an effort to ens the problem. If Ebay got 20 or 30 reports on these listings MAYBE they'd do something.

I know for a fact that Ebay receives between 10-12 "Reports" on forgeries listed by the same Ebay sellers over and over again, and they do ZERO about it.

For Ebay, it's only about the profits from the sales of forgeries.

It's unfortunate that the majority of people who purchase autographs still think that Ebay filters out the forgeries.

Ebay is probably the most dangerous place to buy autographs for those who don't know autographs.

EBay is also heavily-populated with delusional autograph collectors who think they "got lucky" by winning a set of Mickey Mantle & Roger Maris autographs for $188.50 with a Forensic COA from Stephen Rocchi and his Guaranteed Forensic Authenticators group.

I love that idea! :)
