Josh Gibson pickups- show yours and other negro league items

I typically only buy Ruth and Gehrig not because that's all I want but is all I can keep track of/afford. Recently, I lost focus and made a rare exception.

I purchased two original snapshots(most likely 1 of a kinds) that derived from the Monte Irvin estate.
Bonafide TYPE 1 original examples of Josh Gibson are damn near impossible to find. The well known quote by Monte pushed me over the edge and made these must haves for me.

I guess it does fit in my collection a little though right? After all, Josh was considered "The Black Babe Ruth".. or was it the other way around; Ruth was the "White Josh Gibson"? I guess it depends on who you ask.

I would love to see other Josh Gibson Type 1 photos or any other Negro league originals if they are out there. Show your stuff! The stuff is so neat and so rare.

Thank you Gary. With all of your snappers, you must have some negro league items no?

Here is another photo in my collection; the great Satchel Paige.

If this is what happens when you lose focus, Ben, you should plan on doing it more often. Beautiful photos of the Basher!

Great stuff Ben!! Not many Negro Leagues but here's a Satch of mine.

Keep losing focus Ben...

We will be selling (RMY Auctions) the finest collection of Negro League photos ever assembled starting next week (small sampling) and then hitting the market with some jaw-dropping stuff throughout 2017!

As for the Gibson...

I was going after some of the Irvin photos and won a few lots, but that Gibson is great. As I am sure you know, most of the original Gibson images picture him with other people and most of the others picture him in catching pose or just standing there. SO as rare as his photos are to begin with, I think there are less than ten known showing his batting form making it extra special!

Shameless plug... ha! ;)

Looking forward to seeing if there is anything for me to add in the auction as usual. It sounds like there will be a lot of images I haven't seen which I love. Thanks Rhys

Paul.. that Satch is fantastic. I think I bid on that wherever you bought it. I cannot keep track with all the auctions anymore. It is a beautiful image that has been Re-printed million times(seemingly satchel's go to photo for signing). You own an original! Very cool

I do have a few, not to many...they are hard to come by. This one is probably my favorite.

Here is my favorite - the 1928 Pittsburgh Crawfords, featuring Josh Gibson (fifth from the left). This photo originates from the collection of Harold "Hooks" Tinker, the team's manager (third from the left).

This is the earliest image of Gibson during his playing days that I have ever seen.

I have always wondered why Gibson's hat has an "H" on it while all of the others' have a "P." Gibson will not play for the Homestead Grays for another two years, so I do not think that it is. Any other ideas?

Really a great photo! Thanks for sharing. Love it. How big is it? I bet it is really clear in person. I would also like to know about the hat.

Great Gibson photo, Kevin!

Not sure if this helps or not but here is the other known 1928 Crawfords photo w/Gibson (from Hake's Auction a few years ago). The pic was much larger when I uploaded it, not sure why it is showing up so small here. Hard to tell if Gibson's cap has the "P" or "H" (of course, at this size it is obviously impossible), if I had to guess, I would say "H" again.

Research shows that Gibson played on at least one Pittsburgh Industrial League Negro team during 1926 and 1927, prior to his stint with the Crawfords starting in 1928. The "H" cap could have been from his '26-'27 days, he was known to have played for the Gimbel's store team, maybe something to do with that.

Ben - thank you. I have always enjoyed seeing your photos as well.

Phil - thanks for posting that photo. It is also from the the collection of Harold "Hooks" Tinker and was obviously taken at the same time as the above - the players just rearranged themselves in-between photos. Gibson has the exact same "H" hat on.

Kevin.. you have any more? I feel like someone with that type of photo/eye probably has more..

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
There are some awesome photos in this thread. Wow!
I don't have much to contribute on this theme, but here are a few photos of Ol' Satch. The ML debut photo and the Satch screwball grip photos I do not own, but I love them. Saved the images because I liked them so much.

That grip photo and that early autograph are both beautiful.

Gorgeous pictures! Was watching some of the Irvin pics that sold recently, but didn't win any.

I've been looking for a baseball signed by Jackie Robinson from his time in the Negro Leagues. If anyone knows of one I would appreciate any info.

Thanks!

Not an important player (Gibbie Meeks) but from a fairly historically significant and hard to find team, the 1946 Brooklyn Brown Dodgers. Branch Rickey founded the United States (Negro) Baseball League in 1945 and it lasted just two years. He reportedly helped form this league as a guise to scouting negro talent just prior to signing Jackie Robinson. He threw his full support into the Brooklyn Brown Dodgers team that used Ebbets Field for their games.

Looks and feels like a photo!

Think you have Buck O'Neill there too, Jeff.

jb217676 11-29-2016 08:28 PM

Thanks Phil! Which player is Buck, it's hard for me to tell.

Closest player (coach actually) in uniform. Man I miss Ole Buck.
