1860s CDV on ebay

It isn't ever against the rules to out an ongoing auction and I am curious what others think of this CDV? I think it if wasn't for the crease I would give it more consideration. Just a bit high in price, to me, but who knows? I absolutely love the oldest game photos.....

Incredible image! Too bad it has that crease. Still as rare as they are it doesn't bother me near as much as the price.

Great image. Wouldn't be my first choice to sit on the bat like that . Also, I guess there wasn't much concern about getting hit with a foul ball back then, due to a softer ball and soft hitting, 'cause the guy sitting on the bat and the guy reading are going to get hit in the pucker.

I really don't put any negative value on it due to the crease, considering it's age and content. That price is extremely healthy though. However, IMO, it is historically far more important and valuable than a commercially produced 1950's Mantle card.

I have the same cdv in my collection. I think it is one of the best "game action" cdvs in existence. It is early, has an umpire, and it has a scorekeeper. It's hard to top that. I'm unsure of the identification, but it really doesn't matter very much in this case.

Gary - looks like you're gonna have to buy it so you can corner the market. Does your copy have that same Boston photographer stamp?

A little too blurry but it looks a little bit like the scorekeeper has a Civil War kepi or forage hat on.

beautiful cdv...no doubt. not sure if I believe the listing which states batter looks african american???

GaryPassamonte 11-05-2016 03:32 PM

Not a great scan by me. Same photographer, Rob. I never thought about the hat.
I doubt the African American reference, also.

ullmandds 11-05-2016 05:33 PM

And they are cropped slightly differently as the outfielders in right field and the extra guy to the left of the batter. very cool...i want it!

ullmandds 11-05-2016 05:43 PM

i'd guess the 2.60 for shipping doesnt cover insurance?

ramram 11-05-2016 05:52 PM

Maybe a lottery is in order.

I think the crease along with the price is what counted me out. Just a bit much..... However, if I had some extra money I would seriously consider it. I agree a crease on such a rare card doesn't detract as much as on others. I remember some momentous cards with creases which I still liked a lot.

I love the image! The guy ran it as an auction and I couldn't resist. :)

Congrats!

Awesome pickup! I was following that CDV. Such history in that piece. Enjoy it!

After you guys talked it up he closed the listing and relisted it higher. Loose lips sink ships . . . .

Who cares? It didn't sell and went to a straight auction starting at a buck (or a very low amount) after that. Loose lips my hiney :)....

GaryPassamonte 12-01-2016 08:00 AM

Congratulations, Michael. It is one of my favorites.

That on-deck batter sure looks vulnerable

You got it for much less than the seller originally wanted. Congrats on a great pick up.

JeremyW 12-01-2016 03:37 PM

Great pick-up. For me, there's nothing better than the beginnings of our game. Congrats.

Snapolit1 12-01-2016 05:46 PM

I misread his posting history. Mea culpa as we say. Great buy indeed.
