Show in NJ on Sunday September 25th

Hi Everyone,

I am setting up at this smaller show next Sunday September 25th. If anyone is in the area and wants to stop in, please come by & say hello. The show is from 9 AM - 3 PM. Admission is free. There are 3 former NY Giant players who are signing autographs:

The Independence Township Fire Department;
24 Cemetery Road,
Great Meadows, NJ

Here is link to show:

For those who know me, I specialize in rare, eclectic and quite a diverse mix of 19th century-turn of century baseball and other sports cards and display memorabilia + Non Sports and Americana. However, as this is a smaller show, in addition to bringing a sprinkling of, and perhaps even more than a sprinkling of the vintage material I am known for; I plan on also bringing quite a bit of more of the mainstream and even later period stuff, including 1950s-1980s material.

If anyone has any specific requests, please drop me a line, and I will try to bring some additional stuff more suitable for your consideration.

Thanks,
Glenn Mechanick

Cool, will try to stop by.

Hey Glenn:

What a bummer - that show is five minutes from the LOTG office, but I'll be away for the weekend.

Good luck at the show!

If the weather is good I should be able to make it.

This show has a chance to really make it. Last spring I felt it drew a really good crowd and people seemed happy just to be at a show. To be fair, there were a couple dealers with some nice vintage stuff, but a few were rolling with 78 Murray Rookie, 76 Franco Harris type cards as their top stuff it seemed. To be fair I know nothing about the modern auto / jersey / relic type cards, and there was some of that stuff, and many people seemed quite interested.

Heck, maybe anyone local ( within an hour ) should try to set-up and lets just blow this thing out of the water. What's the worst that would happen, we spend 30-40 dollars for the table fee and end up talking & trading with each other for the morning?

Here, Here...Ben! I will be there, so it will be nice to have other vintage dealers as well! Heck, now Ben has encouraged me to bring even more vintage than I originally anticipated! In addition to some T & E cards, which I expected to bring; I may even bring some Old Judges, Buchner, and Allen & Ginter!

This is my strategy at our local shows. Worst I can do is have a good time talking about baseball cards with like minded folks. So far so good....And good luck with the show. IF Glenn (hi Glenn) is there then there will be a some great vintage stuff.

hard to beat

Glenn's selection of vintage material - few dealers offer the quality and selection he has.

I will say this, if anyone is on the fence about this show, they have a half way decent flea market ( Five Acres believe is the name ) about 5 miles further down on route 46. You can also hit the Delaware Water Gap for a hike, get a nice lunch, really a chance for someone to make a nice day for themselves ( and whomever they might choose to bring along ).

Ok,

looking forward to seeing Glenn and everyone else at the show tomorrow. I will bring generally the basics from topps 50's thru early 80's in all four sports. If anyone has any specific requests for anything oddball, please let me know and I will try to accommodate them.
A couple other notes...

1) it will be dime box mania with star cards and commons from 1980-1984. Please bring lists, cards are in order. Will also have commons from the seventies in football and baseball that will also generally be a dime if you are willing to buy more than a couple. Otherwise they'll be a quarter. Please feel free to make offers on entire boxes, I will also let you "create your own 3200 or 5000 count box. Well over 20 boxes to look through.

2) There will be FREE cards, that's right FREE. Anything from 1987 - newer will be FREE. ( Generally 87-91 ) This includes Mets, Yankees, star players, etc

3) Trades are more than welcomed if you prefer / are short on cash. I am not talking about the typical dealer to customer trade, but a FAIR trade that leaves both parties happy.

Glenn, I applaud your support of the smaller show. With the inexorable rise of the AH's and the power they command has been the demise of many of the smaller card shows in the smaller communities and perhaps inevitably the importance of the National. If these shows continue to fall away then I think something in the hobby has died.

I will be there around 1:45 this afternoon.

It was a pleasure meeting Glenn today, he truly had some great stuff. We both came hard and had a good time. Truthfully just didn't have the customers today, but the promoters were a class act. Nobody's fault, just such a nice day and many customers looking for newer cards. Anyway, hopefully people will step up and look to help out Scott by attending / vending at the Jim Thorpe show. I agree with a previous post. It's time to put up or shut up when it comes to the smaller shows, and hopefully people will do their part to keep them alive!

Yes it was great meeting Ben and talking sports cards and other stuff with fellow hobbyists, including Tom. Regardless of the smaller crowd, it was a great time!

Thanks John, and echo to what Ben said; yes we need the smaller local shows if we are to pass this hobby down to the younger generation! It just feels great seeing a dad teaching his son (or daughter; my daughter loves to go by her quote "antiquing") about the hobby...having a budget and going through different options and making the decision that feels just right!

Now on to Scott's Jim Thorpe show...Saturday November 12th! I implore all potential dealers to act now! Scott is CERTAINLY working to make this Show the best that it can possibly be!

So does that mean you're doing my show? :) Seriously I hope any promoter who really has the hobby's best interests at heart makes a success of their efforts, sounds like the promoter of your show today is one of those guys.

September 25th Show

Leon, I concur with what Ben indicated that unfortunately traffic was rather light, and those that attended were more looking for the newer stuff. Regardless, though, to dido what Ben said, I still had a great time, and it was great talking sports cards and other stuff with Ben in between what customers there were. It was also great meeting Tom as well! One more friendly face....Jim Fleck (707 Sports cards) was there as he is relatively local to the show.

I spoke with the promoter afterwards, and he admitted it was much lighter than past shows. We discussed that perhaps the "football" theme worked against us, with 3 former NY Giant signers. Perhaps being on Football Sunday worked against us, coupled with it being such a nice day! Next time he indicated he will go back to Baseball! As Ben said, he is a real class act, and puts in maximum effort!

Anyway, I will give it another shot next time, assuming I do not have a conflict. I also know what better to bring.

Glenn
