1948 Leaf Ted Williams PSA 6 Ghost Image

Would the ghost image be considered rare or not??? I love this card. I just haven't seen too many of them like this.

48 Leafs are notorious for having the coloring background not match up with the card. I had a '48 Leaf Williams last year that was pretty far off like yours. Still a cool looking card.

I think Rob may have been looking at a different card when he wrote up the description of this one as focused. :D |
That is not a ghost, but the term seems to be one of the most misunderstood in the hobby.
A ghost is an different image visible on the card. Often caused by a color transfer when stacking wet sheets during printing, a light print from the printing cylinder hitting the card or more rarely an additional print pass by mistake. What you have is a printing error caused by the sheet moving during a color pass. These are called a registration error, color shift, offset error or other terms. These have far less value normally than a ghost to error collectors. A shift really needs to be drastic or add to the beauty of the card to draw error collectors or often they actually devalue the card as it just looks blurry. |
Agree on the color shift theory. Overall I think cards like this are scarce as I would imagine most got culled out on mfg.
Here are examples of color shifts on 2 pre-wwII cards too :) and a few other regular E145s (not mine) http://luckeycards.com/pe1452masterfinal4x.jpg |

To me, this is not much different than other defects, possibly worse because it detracts greatly from eye appeal. Who wants to look at a blurry card? Registration is a key attribute of a card, obviously, the sharper the better. |
